Cisco-Linksys USB100TX EtherFast 10/100 USB Network Adapter Review

I just received my USB100TX and connected it directly to my TiVo Series 2 with the supplied USB A-B cable. It does *not* come with a CAT-5 UTP Cable, but I have plenty spare and hooked it up. As soon as it was wired to both the TiVo and a hub in my nearby wiring closet the link light was activated. I did not need any of the manuals or driver disks that came in the package.
Within minutes I'd configured my TiVo to recognize the network adapter and my Linksys BEFSR41 Firewall/Router had allocated it a DHCP address.
I immediately ran the test-connection and also forced a daily update.
Downloading schedules are super quick compared to the dialup option. Obviously new firmware updates will also be significantly quicker. Plus the phone line won't be tied up during the call.
I had previously tried a different USB/Ethernet adapter and my TiVo did not recognize it (D-Link USB-650) so beware of using that on a TiVo.
The Linksys USB100TX is the wired adaptor recommended by TiVo and it works perfectly, first time.

D-Link DWL-G132 Compact Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, Cradle Included, 802.11g, 108Mbps Review

Note for operating this device under Windows XP Service Pack 2:
Out-of-the-box, this USB device does not play well with other USB devices. Attempting to do an automatic installation of the drivers (having Windows find the drivers on the CD) consistently yields a Windows STOP error, AKA the Blue Screen of Death. So, I was forced to install the companion software from CD. During the installation, the software told me to update to Windows XP Service Pack 1 with a hotfix I already had installed, to correct known USB conflicts. The device would thereafter only connect to a wireless network if it was plugged in at boot-time, and once disconnected, would not reconnect without a reboot. I still had to get updated drivers for the DWL-G132 from Windows Update and install them; now the conflicts seem but a distant memory.
With the correct drivers, this card has actually started working well in a USB 2.0 port. It is notable to mention that when connected to a USB 1.1 port, the device's performance suffers significantly. Otherwise, it connects reliably to wireless networks anywhere I go and rarely drops signals. It is also very easy to disconnect, reconnect, and swap between laptops and desktop computers. My first reaction when opening the box was that it was too big and would physically take up too much space when plugged in near other USB ports, but it comes with a VERY convenient extended USB cradle. The cradle, of course, allows you to connect the DWL-G132 on the desk, but works with other USB devices just as well, such as memory readers readers, flash memory drives, and even my webcam. That itself is probably the most convenient little gadget I've gotten in a while. If you know the process and can get this card installed properly, it will do very well for you. I'm sure that new revisions will be released containing working drivers in the box, and Windows driver packs will probably include them eventually at install time, but without knowing ahead of time the process was painful.
Also, keep in mind: this is a USB card, it is for portable use. If you try to consistently maximize the throughput, depending on the conditions, it may overheat. If you need to statically connect it to a single machine, get the PCI equivalent.

That was it. Worked right away.

Cisco-Linksys WRT400N Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router Review

Like many of you, I find it very difficult to get clear information on networking products on-line. Unlike other electronic devices, it seems that there are a ton of bozos out there all weighing in on how horrid their router is, when either they don't know what they're doing or they have physicial challenges that aren't the hardware's fault.
Suffice it to say that I did a ton of research before buying this product. As it turned out, Amazon has the best price (inclusive of shipping, of course) - but I checked out the reviews on CNET, NewEgg, and anywhere else I could find information.

This guy really puts the devices through their paces and seems to be relatively unbiased in his approach. I tip my hat to him.
This product is fast and relatively easy to set up. Most importantly it has TWO radios. What this means to you is that you will see TWO different versions of the router when it is on-line. If you'd like you can dedicate one of the channels for N and one for B/G. This is all laid out very clearly on the Linksys product website, should you wish to check that out.
You'll see many products that say "Dual Band" (it can operate in both frequencies) but be careful because unless the product says "Simultaneous transmission" it will not do so at the same time. So if you have, like we do in my house, N users and G users, and you want different security or other settings on the various channels Simultaneous Transmission is the way to go. There may be other reasons to go this route including Media streaming or gaming on the 5 ghz band - this is particularly true if you simply want to eliminate wires and aren't trying to stream your N/5 GHz signal very far.
If you have realistic expectations of what this product will do - and especially if you don't need a Gigabit ethernet connection on your network (I have a Gigabit switch for my wired boxes, which means that transfers to those machines get 'slowed down' to 100 GHz when they are interfacing with the wireless world, but from a practical perspective I haven't noticed any slowing!) this is, by far, the wireless router to get.
I'm not going to argue with the folks who say that they don't see a speed improvement, but I can tell you that we see speed improvements on both the N spectrum and the G spectrum relative to our old Belkin pre-N router.
Finally, the design looks funky in pictures and in the videos that I saw. In the home it's pretty swank looking and certainly less noticable relative to something with exterior antenae. So another tip of the cap to the designers.
Overall I'm very impressed with this device and pleased to give it 5 stars!

Buffalo Technology TeraStation III 8.0 TB (4 x 2 TB) Network Attached Storage TS-X8.0TL/R5 Review

This is the first time I've ever taken the time to write a review, but I'm here to buy yet another one of these units, and I felt compelled to respond to a couple of the negative reviews here.
First off, this is the Terastation III, not the Pro as referenced in another review. Additionally, I own a medium sized video and animation facility, with up to 7 artists accessing one of our three Terastation IIIs at all times for video, animation, and rendering, and this unit IS compatible with Apple OS. Configuration is done via a web browser, not a PC. We're cross platform here, and PC vs. Mac has nothing to do with this unit. As for Mac, since it doesn't use drive lettering, you do have to know how to set it up as a server, by IP address, in MAC OS. PC is much easier in terms of mapping the drive, but either way it works fine regardless of platform.
These drives are fast, particularly if you set up port trunking, which is a very high end feature for a NAS in this price range. By using port trunking (which uses 2 network ports to effectively double the network connection speed), we have been able to eliminate several of our NAS units in favor of just a few Terastation IIIs. Multiple users can access the drive simultaneously with no problems.
As for reliability, we did have one DOA unit, which Amazon promptly replaced at no cost (not even shipping). Other than that, we've had absolutely no problems. Having said that, we ALWAYS back up nightly (that's an easy thing to set up in the web browser based config panel), and there's no substitute for that no matter what kind of NAS you buy.
As for Buffalo in general, we have used several different models of Terastations and Linkstations, some of which ran continuously for 4 and 5 years without failing before we removed them from service. In fact, the only Terastation that has failed on us, wasn't even the unit itself; it was one of the drives. 5 years isn't an unusual life span for a hard drive that runs day and night.
So I give this 5 stars, and Buffalo tech support is pretty much the best I've experienced. When you call, the phone is answered by a real person at Buffalo's service center (in Texas, I believe), and they always know pretty much everything about their products without having to read it from a computer screen. Hold times vary, but support is top notch.

I'am using the SMC adapter for my wireless connection on my "Ubuntu 10.4 Linux OS system", it works great, no problems what so ever...It gives me a great signal, to my router one can not ask for anything better...I tried NetGear's wireless adapter, and finally after hours trying to get it to work, when they said it would not work on Linux huh!...But I returned it, then I purchased the SMC 802.11N, all that I can say is it just works, a very good wireless adapter... I would buy SMC products if needed in my next purchase...

I purchased this product 5 months ago, and after 2 returns I am trying to get my money back. In case you have any doubt whether to buy this product call Linksys sales (number available on their web site). I just talked a sales representative who says he doesn't recommend the BEFW11P1. It is a hybrid product and is not updated anymore. He says buy a separate Wireless AP/Router and print server. He recommended the BEFW11S4. If you want to understand the real pain of buying this product, here are the gorey details:
4/19 - 5/8: traded mails with Jennifer Cambay (12 mails total). She stopped answering 4/29. Sent 2 mails to ... that weren't answered.
5/13: Talked to Ricky. He approved an exchange. RMA #RH01015236
6/12: Talked to William who gave more suggestions that didn't work
6/21 Talked to technical support again. Second exchange approved. RMA #XH01121359
7/9 Talked to Jason. Called customer service to check status of exchange. Explained they are having shipping system problems. Should ship in next few days.
7/18 Called customer service again. Still shipping system problems. Should ship in next few days.
7/23 Replacement unit arrived
8/6: Talked to Hanam at 2nd tier technical support. Suggested anti-virus problems & interrupts. Didn't solve problems.
8/6: Talked to Tyler at technical support. Same suggestions as previously. He says to call back next day.
8/7: Talked to Carrie at technical support. She says to call sales or customer service to get money back
8/7: Talked to Linksys Sales. He says they don't recommend BEFW11P1 anymore. Hybrid product. Not updated anymore.

NETGEAR DG834 ADSL Firewall Router Review

My previous DSL modem/firewall/router was plagued by buggy software and frequent crashes requiring constant reboots of the device. When I purchased the DG834, I was hoping that it was a superior product, and I was not disappointed.
Setup really was simple. I had it up and running in under three minutes! It correctly detected my DSL settings and auto-configured itself mostly. I of course changed the default password (as everyone should) and that was it.
Some nice features are the ability to block sites that you don't want users on your network to be able to visit (which is a big plus for me), and you can have it block sites by keyword, IP address or domain name, a very handle feature which my previous device lacked.
Also, being able to have the network/router logs and alerts e-mailed to you on a regular basis or when certain conditions are met (such as a blocked site that someone tried to access) is another huge plus.
From a security standpoint the DG834 is rock solid. I tested the firewall using a very extensive port scan, and it had all the ports stealthed out of the box and correctly logged the port-scan in it's internal log. Very impressive!
Overall the DG834 is a fantastic purchase, well worth the price. It has shown itself to be a very stable, reliable and user-friendly modem/firewall/router that I am very pleased with.

This product is basically three products: an airport extreme wireless router, a networked drive, and finally, with Leopard, a networked backup system. Overall, it's a very good product, but there are some serious limitation one should be aware of.
As a router, it is fantastic. Typical Apple ease of use, with all configuration done by a very intuitive GUI application.
Unfortunately, it's not a great network drive. The drive appears to be internally connected using a very slow USB connection. You will find that even with a computer connected via Gb/s ethernet, transfer speeds will be limited to around 5-6 MB/s, tops. If you connect two Macs via fast ethernet, you can often get over 40 MB/s transfer speeds, so this is a rather large disappointment, especially for a device which will be getting a lot of use if you use Time Machine.
Time Machine is great in theory, and can act as a form of automatic version control, but it has a few issues. First, it is a file-based differential backup. That means, for example, that if even a single bit of a 1 GB file is changed, the ENTIRE file gets backed up. Not only does this take a lot of time, it quickly depletes your backup drive because the same data is added to the disk repeatedly. To get around this, you have to explicitly exclude backing up large files that are often changed. Good candidates for exclusion are Mail and iDisk caches, as well as virtual machine disk images.
There have also been numerous reports of Time Machine backups being susceptible to corruption. I've experienced this once, myself, after a backup was canceled, so I can vouch that it happens. However, the problems can often be fixed by deleting the last backup. The next backup will take a long time as the computer must scan the full disk again, but the backups then continue on normally after that. I have yet to have Time Machine get my backups into a state where they can't be fixed by this method.
Time Machine backups have their place, and come in very handy to recover accidentally deleted files. However, they should only be considered part of a larger backup scheme. They probably shouldn't be trusted for a full recovery, and won't be of any help if your computer's drive completely fails, anyway. (How are you going to run Time Machine if you can't boot your computer? EDIT: As pointed out by the commenter, if your drive fails completely, you can still reinstall the system from the DVD and then run the Transfer Assistant to recover your files from the Time Capsule. It's not as good as a complete backup, as Transfer Assistant is notorious for breaking applications, but you won't lose your work.) As such, you should image your entire drive regularly, in addition to using Time Machine.

Linksys by Cisco Sprint Mobile Router 802.11G Review

This product was exactly what I was looking for. Create a network using my Sprint USB Mobile Data Card so that 3 folks could share the connection.
Problem #1 - The Sprint USB mobile device (598U) I started out with was not officially supported so it worked sporatically. I understand this but you can not find this product on the Linksys site at all. I called their "tech" support to find out why it didn't work. Took me over 2 hours to get through the hard to understand support people. Just ouch. I had a headache after getting off the phone.
After getting an officially supported card the product worked great. Not one issue in the 3 months we have been using it.

Cisco-Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router Review

The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers have been the number one most popular wireless router devices available for the past few years. So this begs the question why Cisco would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by needlessly changing an almost perfect product. The fact is that versions 1 -4 of the G and the GS (with Speedboost) versions of this router were fantastic. Those earlier routers run a flexible and powerful Linux based firmware that has been perfected for the past few years a numerous updates and tweaks. However, the earlier WRT54G product has now been replaced with a less powerful wireless product (version 5) that has had its onboard flash RAM chopped in half from 4MB to 2MB and its system RAM cut from 16MB to 8MB. Instead of the flexible, reliable and powerful Linux firmware the new WRT54G version 5 routers run the licensed VxWorks firmware instead. There is nothing wrong with using VxWorks and over time Cisco will probably work out the bugs but for now the newest wireless routers are not reliable.
Why would Cisco do this to its most popular Linksys brand of wireless routers ? Apparently it might be a case where the first four versions were too flexible for their own good. The open source Linux firmware with the large amount of flash and system memory was attractive to many third party independent software developers that were turning the WRT54G and GS routers into powerhouse micro Linux wireless computers with a functionality approaching and often surpassing the $600+ wireless routers that Cisco sells. There might also have been an excess number of product warranty returns for the WRT54G routers due to so many people flashing them with non-Linksys third party firmware that sometimes can "brick" a router or make it unusable.
Your solution is to either look for a previous version of the "WRT54G" router before version 5 or purchase the "WRT54GS" (SpeedBooster) version 4 which as of the posting of this review is still available in the stores and it still uses the popular Linux firmware. You will pay $20 more for the GS model but compared to the version 5 of the G model it is worth the extra money. The GS models 1 - 4 are all good with GS version 3.0 and 3.1 reportedly being the most flexible of the bunch and GS 4.0 being the latest. If you want to use third party firmware you may want the GS versions 2.0 - 3.0/3.1 since they have the most flash RAM while still having newer Broadcom based processors. Finally, if you do plan to flash your WRT54G with third party firmware the ones before version 4 of the WRT54G wireless routers are supposed to be easier to work with.
How do you find which version you are looking for? Look on the bottom of the box near the scan tag for the serial number of the router. For the WRT54G wireless routers look for CDFA or a CDF9 or lower (CDF8, CDF7, 6, etc.) Any serial number with CDF5 (v2.0) through CDF9 (v3.1) are the most flexible for use with third party firmware. Unless you want to use a more risky third party firmware I recommend that you read the manual instructions on how to carefully flash these older router models with a newer Linksys firmware which is designed for that specific router version. The latest official Linksys firmware for each specific version of router can be obtained from the Linksys support site. Completely avoid the WRT54G routers with the "CDFB" (v5.0) serial numbers since those are the buggy VxWorks versions. You could also simply purchase the WRT54GS (v4.0) routers that say Speedboost on the box. You will see the "CGN6" serial numbers on the box and as of this review these were still using Linux firmware with software based SpeedBoost enhancements but the RAM and hardware inside seems to be essentially the same as the older WRT54G (v4.0) version 4. The WRT54GS v2.0 (CGN3) through v3.0 (CGN5) are also good and will have more flash RAM available if you want use the wireless router with third party firmware. I would like to note that flashing the router with firmware other than an official Linksys releases obtained from the Linksys support web site will void the warranty and can result in a "bricked" or damaged router.

PROS: The most popular, flexible, reliable and highly rated wireless router on the market before the WRT54G version 5. Previous versions could be flashed with powerful third party firmware. The latest WRT54GS v4.0 routers can still be purchased and except for the SpeedBoost software enhancement (including a different version of Linux based firmware) they are essentially the same as older WRT54G v4.0 routers.
CONS: The latest version 5 has less Flash and System RAM and uses a buggy non-Linux based firmware. There is no rumor of this yet but in the near future Cisco might also release a newer WRT54GS router non-Linux based router (WRT54GS v5.0 ???)
CONCLUSION: With all the changes to the memory and the firmware this latest G model is really a very different product and Cisco should have changed the model number altogether. Neverless, I hope that Cisco works out the bugs in their current version so that the G version can at least partially return to its glory days. There are rumors that a still newer model popular Linux based router might be re-released with the model name of WRT54GL but until that happens we can still purchase a very good WRT54GS v4.0 Speedbooster model.
THE BOTTOM LINE: I give five stars to the older WRT54G models and five stars to the latest WRT54GS model. But I give only one star for the newest WRT54G version 5 which averages the score to only 2.5 stars (rounded down to 2 stars since v5.0 is the newest and most abundant WRT54G model that you can find in the stores).

This switch is as advertised. It works out of the box, without any problems, setups, uplink switches, or anything else. Just plug and play.
Silent, fan-less operation. However, it does get a bit warm to the touch. If fully loaded (using all ports at high volumes of traffic) and running in warmer room, overheating may become an issue. Even so, I'll take that possibility over yet another noisy fan in my office.

Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Pro Smart Repeater and Range Extender (SR600EX) Review

So i've searched around for many repeaters for my wi-Fi range extending problem and I came across those from Hawking, Linksys, among many others. I saw this one on an Engadget review and came to my favorite shopping location to purchase it (Amazon).... Received the unit very quickly and the first thing i noticed is that the box was heavier than i thought it was going to be (around 3 lbs or so). This was already a good sign since i was used to those cheap, lightweight plastic computer products. But this was not one of them. The Pro Repeater came with a 30 foot cable, a metal desktop stand (which I didn't need), another 3 foot patch cable, a power over ethernet adapter and power adapter. The unit itself is made with very good craftsmanship and also looks really slick. Now to the application..
I have a backhouse thats about 500 feet from my front house which i have a linksys router. The backhouse gets 0 signal. I purchased the SR600EX and set it up in my backhouse. Attached the power adapter to the wall and connected the PoE adapter to it (Amped includes very helpful tags so only a dummy would connect it wrong). Anyways i placed the repeater on the outside wall of the backhouse and then did a scan w/ my computer. There was my linksys network!! I now have full bars in the backbouuse and whats best is the PoE adapter also has an extra RJ-45 port where i've connected by wired bluray player with Netflix! I have my IPad which i can use freely throughout the 1000 sq ft backhouse as well as in my yard beyond the backhouse.
I called Amped's service department also to see how i could get my speed faster and the very friendly rep recommended pairing it up with the AP600EX (which i installed in the front house and pointed it towards the backhouse). The agent told me that this setup was good for 2 miles+ and that its always good to have HIGH POWER UNITS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CONNECTION (he really stressed this point) but all i needed it for was 500 ft or so. Either way, i'm ecstatic, my wife is happy and the kids are also! I highly recommend Amped based on their product performance and customer service! Thanks Amped!

EAP-3660 Wireless Access Point Review

I've set up many AP's. I am very impressed by the EAP-3660. I've had mine up for 7 months now and I have not had 1 problem. The range is very good and consistent even through walls. I have used other AP's including other Engenius protects and I have found their performance claims to be exaggerated. However, this is not the case for the EAP-3660 which is clearly a step up from most AP's when speaking signal strength. I mounted my unit on the ceiling and it is no more noticeable than a smoke detector. I am powering it using the EnGenius EPE-5818af POE adapter, which I thought was overpriced, but it does make the ceiling installation much easier not having to worry about a power plug. I am using the EAP-3660 as a guest wifi in my office. I've had many people with different laptops and phones connect to it without and glitches. I strongly recommend this product.

Do you know what Cisco IOS is?
If not, just stop considering this right now. This isn't for you.
If you're working on a CCNA/CCNP cert, this thing is a great (albeit expensive) way to force you to learn your way around IOS, since there is nothing that will force you to configure your network properly faster than your own home. If you're working on a CCNP, it's got a lot of the features that are hard/impossible to find on used gear, plus you get the latest IOS updates (note that you'll have to hassle Cisco to enable your SmartNet contract since Amazon doesn't have a reseller code to provide). If anything, this product is worth it just for that: the ability to get your own legal IOS images for use in emulators such as GNS3, where you can set up your own virtual lab to play with/break things.
If you want this for your house, it's overkill unless you've got a 40+ megabit WAN connection (don't consider something like an old 1700 series if you've got that kind of speed, it'll just choke once you start maxxing things out).
Note that this product has the advanced image, which has support for OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, VLANs, IDS (not the best performance though, I'd upgrade to an 1800 series if you want decent throughput on the firewall), advanced QoS and IPv6 support.
If you're getting an 871 for certification practice, get this version. If you're an office with 20-30 computers, unless you KNOW that you need the above features, get the standard version and save a few dollars.
If your office has high bandwidth usage, or has more than 40 computers, start looking at higher end versions (and probably a VAR who can guide you better).

D-Link DIR-635 RangeBooster N 650 Router Review

The D-Link DIR-635 router is the best router that I've seen from D-Link so far. It has an amazingly new and easier to navigate interface, which is much better from their older control panels (the blue and white one). I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54GXv2, which gave me wireless problems from the beginning. All my wireless problems were gone when I switched to this router.
Things that I like about this router (pro):
- New graphical interface that's easier to use.
- Ability to notify you of any firmware updates.
- Enhanced logs & statistics.
- Better wireless connectivity with my Dell laptop.
- Support of only WPA/WPA2 with AES encryption.
Things I wish this router had (con):
- Gigabit Lan/Ethernet, it's limited to 10/100 speeds.
- Ability to download firmware updates directly from the router.
I'm giving this router 4 Stars (would give it 4.5 if there was an option) since it does not have Gigabit ethernet for my desktops and file server. New generation routers such as this one, IMHO, should come with it as a standard. It would add even more value to this router and eliminate the need of purchasing a 10/100/1000 switch.
I have not yet purchased an 802.11n network adapter for my laptop, which I'm thinking would give me an even better experience (longer distance with stronger connectivity). Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and the high cost associated with this router was worth it.

Airport Extreme 802.11N (5TH GEN) Review

Although setup is quick, it is the high performance 802.11n dual RF bands and the creation of my own cloud storage (HD on USB port) that makes the AirPort Extreme a best-in-class choice!
Setup:
After reading the other reviews, I knew this was going to be quick and easy. I started a pot of coffee thinking I could enjoy a cup while plugging in the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and configuring it. Here are the steps:
1.Attached an ethernet cable from the AEBS to my ISP connection. Plugged in the AC adapter and power cord. AEBS powered up. Status light flashed green for a second, glowed amber for several seconds, then flashed amber until the AEBS was configured from a computer.
2.From my MacBook Pro (wireless access works fine for this step), the airport utility app had already launched and was waiting for me (otherwise, go to Applications\Utilities\AirPort Utility.app). Followed instructions that included typing in a router name and two passwords. The default AEBS configuration selects channels and RF bands automatically to optimize speed.
3.Plugged a spare hard drive (in my case: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted 1 TB HD) into AC outlet and the USB port. As soon as the HD had started, it showed up as a MBP network drive device on 'Finder'. I then created a folder, transferred a file, and read it back.
At this point, the coffee machine beeped to let me know my coffee was ready. I was done before the coffee was even ready - about three minutes from opening the box to being operational! Gotta luv it.
Basic Performance Testing:
Not about to let the coffee go to waste, I proceeded with some performance testing. I conducted some very basic data throughput tests by transferring files from the MBP through the AEBS to the HD. This test arrangement kept my ISP download and upload data rates out of the equation. For the wired tests, the MBP was connected to one of the three AEBS Gigabit ports.
Test 1 (a control test configuration between MBP and HD via USB on MBP):
Write to HD:33.8 MBytes/sec
Read from HD:34.3 MBytes/sec
Test 2 (wired data transfer)
From MBP to AEBS via Gigabit port, then from AEBS to HD via USB):13.6 MBytes/sec
From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP via Gigabit port):18.3 MBytes/sec
Test 3 (wireless data transfer - 5 GHz RF band)
From MBP to AEBS, then from AEBS to HD via USB): 7.8 MBytes/sec
From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP):12.6 MBytes/sec
Test 4 (range test, 5 GHz RF band between MBP and AEBS with a max capacity of 300 Mbits/sec):
3 ft, devices in close proximity:300 Mbits/sec
50 ft, indoors, no ext walls in path:243 Mbits/sec
70 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path:144 Mbits/sec
80 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path:104 Mbits/sec
Default settings seem to provide high bit-rate connections. Using 'manual setup' in Airport Utility.app, I tested several variations on the configuration without improving the rate/range for the 802.11n wireless provided by the default setting of the APBS. Reading data from the HD back through the AEBS to the MBP was always faster than writing data to the HD. Including ethernet into the data transfer path (Test 2 compared to Test 1) reduced data rates in half. Including WiFi into the data transfer path (Test 3 compared to Test 2) reduced data rates to 2/3. Range test performance was very good for distances within 50 feet.
My own storage cloud:
Originally, I envisioned just using the HD (USB port on AEBS) as a network drive for a SVN (i.e., software version control) repository in support of software development on my MBP. But, I realized that this drive is a common storage location for all my devices (MBP, iPad, iPhone, iTouch) that is accessible wirelessly on my local WiFi. And with a VPN connection, from anywhere with WiFi access to the internet. Simply stated, I have my very own cloud! We aren't talking about a skimpy few GB either, but a full TB of dedicated exclusive mine-only cloud. Now, that's cool.
Why buy the 5th generation AEBS:
-High performance 802.11n wireless performance
-Easy and quick setup
-USB port for attaching a hard drive or printer
-Capability to create my very own AEBS WiFi storage cloud for all my devices
-Guest access to ISP without access to other devices or attached USB device

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500101 (Black) Review

Hello, just to clarify the information that the first two reviewers complained about... this model can be purchased with a USB 2.0 or 3.0 cable. Although the 3.0 cable is compatible with a USB 2.0 port, it is only going to run at increased speed if your computer has a high speed USB 3.0 port. In other words, you could invest in the cable now in hopes of upgrading in the future, but if you only have USB 2.0 port on your computer you will only get 2.0 speed until you upgrade your port. Seagate offers a kit to do this for a laptop at a reasonable price but I'm not sure about doing a conversion on a PC, you'd probably just need a newer model PC/hard drive that comes with the high speed USB 3.0. This information is available if you do your homework on the Seagate site, which offers many cable options for this system and gives a lot of explanation of how they can be used. I think it is unfair to rate this item so low due to not fully understanding the differences among the cables and what the terms mean. I would suggest anyone interested in this system to check out the Seagate site for more technical information as well as customer reviews and cnet.com for objective reviews by industry experts. Seagate also gives a great overview with written content and also video explaining the entire GoFlex system and the different models & options available, which are compatible with Mac, PC, in home networks, sharing over internet, and playing stored content directly on your TV. It's pretty innovative.

ASUS (USB-N13) Wireless-N USB Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates Review

This is a great dongle, and has great range. It is in my PC in my office, when my router is on the completely other side of my house. It goes through 3 walls, at a distance of approx 50 feet. I don't get perfect signal with it, but I get signal listed as "GOOD" at 108 Mbps, which is perfect for movie streaming, and playing online games (And I play ALOT of World of Warcraft!). This dongle should fit most peoples needs. The only downside is the software that comes with it. The software sucks, but you can use the default setup in Windows anyways, so don't even install the software. Besides that, it a great dongle.

Syba SY-ADA24007 802.11 b/g Wireless Pocket Size Router and WiFi Adapter 2-in-1 Design Review

Had I seen other reviews before I ordered this adapter I would have skipped it. The device offers minimal security encryption and minimal SSID customization. The device only accepts 5 character passphrases, and you can only modify the numbers of the SSID, you cannot change the name. Also the device does not support non-broadcast SSID's. The manual states in one small spot, not to try and use the device in Access Point mode unless you are using the power adapter. If you try to run the device in Access Point mode you will end up rendering the device completely inoperable, even as a wireless network adapter. Before breaking the device I was able to use it as an access point with extremely limited range. But as mentioned by previous reviews, the connection kept dropping out. I do not recommend this device unless you are just looking for an AC to USB power adapter. That is the only part included with this product that actually works for something. If you are looking for a portable pocket wireless device, try the D-Link DAP-1350 Wireless N Pocket Router. It is about the same size as the Syba, but works as a router, access point, or a wireless network adapter; all three modes can operate via USB Power, or through the included power adapter. It may cost 3 times as much, but it is 10x better and will last much longer.

Iomega iConnect Wireless Data Station 34779 Review

I was very wary about buying this product with so many negative reviews, but I wanted a way to make my USB printer accessible by the rest of the family from their wi-fi enabled laptops. I also thought it would be handy to add USB storage in the future. I looked at various NAS storage solutions, but all of them were more expensive than I needed for this simple job. The iConnect arrived, I followed the simple instructions, and, so far, it has done everything I wanted it to do.
I followed a couple of steps that may not have been obvious - I first of all plugged a 2GB flash drive into one of the USB ports to give it some local storage for its print serving function and connected it to a LAN port. I was able to see it fine, I checked for updates and found a newer release of firmware - that downloaded without problems and the device restarted. Then I set up the wireless information - no problem with seeing the WiFi from the basement. Then I disconnected the LAN and tried to connect wirelessly. It wasn't immediately seen by the iConnect software, and I noticed that there was an updated version of that software as well, so I downloaded and installed that. At that point, I could see the device and its storage wirelessly. I did give it a static IP address on my router, but that may not have been necessary. Finally, I plugged in the USB printer, loaded the drivers and it all worked fine.
I loaded the iConnect software on a couple of laptops (XP and Vista), updated the software, and then could see the printer.
Overall, this has worked as planned - I haven't stressed it yet, and I wish it had been seen wirelessly as soon as I had disconnected the LAN, but I got there in the end.

SMC SMCWBR14-G2 Barricade G 2.4GHz 54Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router Review

I can tell you all you need to know about this router in one sentence: Do not buy it or you will regret it. Don't say I didn't warn you.
This router feels fragile and flimsy, and it is. I bought it in May and it worked fine until August, when I moved it to a different room and plugged it into a new outlet. Then it stopped working. I have had SMC routers in the past, and this has happened to me before: the router works fine for a while, but it cannot withstand any kind of handling, no matter how gentle.
Worse yet, when I called SMC technical support to get an RMA number so I could return the router for a new one, they insisted that I spend over an hour trying one thing after another to make it work. Sorry, but it is simply not worth over an hour of my time to try to repair a $49 router, especially when I know from experience that it cannot be repaired and I need a replacement. Eventually, I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was put on infinite hold.
In the end, I did what I should have done from the very beginning: toss the SMC in the trash and buy a Linksys router. (Netgear routers work well, too.) The Linksys feels far more solid, and I expect it will be more durable and reliable as well. I have never heard anyone say anything positive about SMC routers; trust me, you won't be the first!

Got the phone within 2 days.
Setup for skype was very easy, just put in your user-name and password -> done.
After that making calls via skype is also very easy to handle and if you have a skype phonenumber it tells you if you receive a call via landline or skype.
The only drawback are the plugs on this phone, they are european! I was very surprised since I ordered it on Amazon US. I had to use converter plugs to make it work. This should be in the product info!
With US plugs it would have been a 5 star rating.

I go to school in Clearfield, Utah and I get two or three bars out of four. Performance is great and is really cheap compared to the crooked 2 year contract guys. It has ulimited data plan, but the catch is that it slows down after 5GB. It still works but for you guys that do go use more than 5GB, Cricket does have a 10GB plan for $65 a month. Make sure you check your coverage maps BEFORE you purchase for your own good. I watch Youtube and I normally don't have to wait for it to upload. Heck it even comes with a cable for if you want to keep the usb free for another device. It plugs into the modem and has two sync cables. One you plug into your computer, and the second for mouse etc. I love it!

Panasonic BL-C140A Outdoor MPEG-4 Network Camera (Silver) Review

This review is going to be somewhat technical and I'll mention some other choices. I've installed more than 10 Panasonic network cameras across the product line; so how does this one compare? The whole series is rock solid reliable. As far as the practical use as an outdoor cam, the BL-C140A is a middle of the road compromise. As other reviewers have discovered, the night time image quality is not very good. The BL-C140A has a 1/4" CMOS sensor which produces a little bit better daytime image than the 1/6" CMOS on the popular BL-C111A and BL-C131A models. If you're looking for a cam to mount in an outdoor location that is protected from direct moisture (like hanging under a sheltered roof eave) then I'd recommend the Panasonic BB-HCM511A instead. The BB-HCM511A uses a CCD sensor (vs. CMOS) that produces a richer dynamic range of colors during the day, and has much better low light sensitivity. It can still show the scene under moonlight, whereas the BL-C140A would show a pitch black view. If you truly need an "outdoor" camera because it's going to be exposed to the rain, then the BB-HCM531A is an excellent outdoor model. The only difference between the BB-HCM511A and BB-HCM531A is that the BB-HCM531A comes with an extra plastic cover for the connectors in the back. Panasonic charges more than $200 for this piece of plastic, so it you're crafty you can make your own weatherproof cover for the BB-HCM511A cable connectors and save some money (hint: silicone sealant works). Note that if you don't already have a POE enabled switch, the BB-HCM series doesn't come with a POE injector so you need to order that separately. Coming back to this BL-C140A model, the other thing I didn't like is that the POE (Power Over Ethernet) is proprietary instead of using the industry 802.3af standard. So if you have a POE switch then it won't be able to use all the neat power management features. The BB-HCM series however does support the 802.3af POE standard. If your budget is just enough for this cam, the BL-C140A still a wonderful unit. If you can afford to pay just a little bit more then check out the other models I mentioned and you'll get a superior night time view. Here's another tip, if you want to have the camera view on your desktop all the time in Vista or Windows 7, go to the Microsoft Windows Live Gallery and search for Panasonic to download the CoconutView Sidebar Gadget. Then you won't even need to open the browser windows to get a peek at what the camera is seeing.

I just got this modem installed by my service provider (Telefónica) and it works great! It works better than my old HUAWEI EchoLife HG520s. Much better. And now we have 4 computers (actually, 3 computers and 1 TV) connected by this device. Great job. I really recommend it. Really recommended.

NETGEAR Wireless-N 150 DSL Modem Router DGN1000 Review

When I was looking for a new modem router in one, I wanted to find something that would work well but was inexpensive. After going to Best Buy, this is what I came up with. It seemed to be exactly what I needed. The good news is that for the first year I had it, when I used it with a wired connection, it worked very well.
But there are 2 downsides to it. When I tried to use it as a wireless router, the signal was often too weak to navigate the Internet, even for computers that were nearby but especially for computers that were further away in the house. The second issue is that it started working only sporadically after one year. Of course, after one year, my free support had terminated, and I had to buy another router modem.
Best Buy doesn't offer many choices, so I went with another Netgear, this time the N300 Wireless. We'll see if it serves me any better.

I purchased 3 of these units (the 2 unit kit plus one additional) for my home media distribution. Originally I had planned to use only wireless, but found too many signal disruptions causing HD video to become choppy or drop completely. I have one connected to a Linksys DMA2100 extender, one to my DirecTV HD DVR and one to my Vista Media server. DirecTV VOD works flawlessly, as does the extender. This solution is more expensive than running CAT6, but it is so easy to set up and use that I didn't mind the extra cost. Another thing: one of these units is in my family room, and I was worried about the green lights being a distraction. There is a utility that comes with these devices that allows you to turn the indicators off if you desire. Overall, I've been very happy with these units.

Panasonic TV Interface for IP Camera and Pet Cam Review

Lets you view local as well as remote webcameras on the TV. Works well, it does what it says. The unit is very flexible yet easy to setup.
I wish it could start automatically in Multicamera mode after power failure instead of just Sequence mode or a single camera mode. But it just takes a couple of clicks with a remote to get there.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter WMP300N Review

This draft N PCI adapter works great paired with the Linksys WRT300N draft Wireless-N router. I have three computers in my home all using WMP300N cards along with my WRT300N router. I also have a Vonage phone adapter hooked into my router (via Ethernet cable). No complaints at all. This product is speedy and appears to be low latency as well. It can easily handle the 4 Megabits/second download rate from my cable internet without any glitches or slowing down. If only more websites transmitted that fast!
There is one caveat, however, I recommend that you do not install the Linksys software that comes on the CD. I found that it utilized quite a bit of CPU bandwidth just keeping the connection current. However, if you let Windows install the DRIVERS ONLY by searching the CD-ROM for the correct drivers, then it works perfectly and doesn't burn up any extra CPU cycles. With the Linksys driver software installed, I was seeing upwards of 30-50% CPU utilization even when not surfing the web. With the drivers installed via Windows XP hardware installation wizard, CPU utilization went down to practically zero whether surfing the web or not. Great product, especially for the price!
Addendum regarding drivers - February 24, 2007 - The newest drivers do not cause the CPU utilization problems. I still don't think they are necessary, but at least they don't cause high CPU utilization problem.

This USB adapter will cause your sound card to stutter in a horrible manner. Many users on the netgear forum are reporting this issue and NETGEAR is not fixing this problem.
This is not a problem with XP/Vista IRQ conflicts (I went through the process of verifying this myself, which requires me to re-install XP to get my hyper threading support back). This is 100% a NETGEAR issue.

Uniden DECT2085-3 DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone/Answering System with Two Extra Handsets and Chargers Review

I've had 2 good Unidens in the past, I was never too thrilled with my current 2.4GHz VTech system, and I have TWO different friends with 5.8GHz Panasonic's that they are ready to use for shooting practice...
I was therefore very careful in my new purchase and I've tested every aspect of this system in the last 2 weeks - it passes with flying colors!
- Most importantly, this 1.9GHz system imparts no interference with my wireless router, parked just 3 feet away... and while it doesn't penetrate a metal garage door if you're standing right in front of it, I can walk out the front door and talk clearly halfway past my THIRD neighbor's house.
- These NiMH batteries have given me 4 days off the charger WITH 4 hours of talktime, and the charging seems to be 'smart' because they never get very warm, and get cool when fully charged. Oh, and the the handsets have actual battery gauges instead of just beeps to tell you you're about to lose the call...
- The speakerphones are quite good in both the handsets and the base-station, and when you've left the handset in another room you'll wonder how you ever lived without Caller ID and dialing on the base.
- All the various volumes and ringers are adequately loud and I find most all the controls and menu functions intuitive. The single exception is the 'hold' function, which ought to be a single key-press, but requires pushing Intercom, then Select and then Hang-up to stop everything from ringing... I also love (maybe common nowadays) the answering machine message indicators on the handsets and the ability to both retrieve messages from the handsets and also to monitor an incoming message.
As you can tell, I'm VERY happy with my new system, and I hope it lasts a long time (like my previous Unidens...)

This antenna is great and I love the base but unfortunately it's very well known that adding a cable between the antenna and the wireless adapter itself greatly degrades the quality of the signal. The cable itself is a fixed length so you can't replace it with a shorter one if your setup allows you to do so so if you do use the base then you are forced to run your signal through the entire length of the cable. As stated, the antenna itself is great and works on any SMA connector and greatly seems to have improved my signal reception vs a card's default antenna which are normally about half the size of this antenna. My recommendation is to simply buy the antenna itself and skip the base unless you just really need it for whatever reason but know that using a base like this will cost you in terms of performance.

Seagate GoFlex 1.5TB FireWire 800 USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive for Mac STBA1500100, Silver Review

As a person who has gone through a lot of harddrives, when it comes to quality, I put Seagate drives on the top as the brand for go-to drives.
But as more and more people look for 1TB drives and are wanting portability, Seagate has their cheaper FreeAgent GoFlex drives (which are in my opinion, not as robust and also comes with pre-installed stuff that you don't want) and now the 2011 release of the new Seagate GoFlex Ultra-portable drives.
Here are my thoughts on this drive:
I. THE DRIVE
The 1TB GoFlex Ultra-Portable drive is pretty small. If vertical, it's about 3 inches in height, 2 inches in width.
The construction looks like metal but it's not, it's plastic with a metal finish, but either way, metal or plastic, if you drop them from a high distance, you're probably going to do more damage anyway (and yes, I have accidentally done this before).
Although the drive is for the Mac, it also works for PC.
The contents are:
* GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive formatted for Mac
* GoFlex FireWire 800 Adapter with 18-inch (46cm) cable
* GoFlex USB 2.0 Adapter with 18-inch (46cm) cable
* QuickStart Guide
* 3-Year Limited Warranty
System Requirements are:
* Mac OS X Operating System 10.5.8 or higher
* Windows 7, Vista, XP
* Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 port
Note: HFS+ Driver for PC operability is available by download.
II. INSTALLATION
You get a connector that is USB 3.0 (backwards compatible with 2.0 drives) and also a connector that is Firewire which plugs to the bottom of the drive.
Knowing that the drives require power, I first plugged it into my Mac keyboard (expecting it to fail) and it didn't work because it didn't receive enough power. So, I hooked it up to a Belkin USB 2.0 hub (connected to the back of my iMac) and it worked. I have several powered 1TB drives, so it's nice to have something that is USB or Firewire powered and is also small and compact.
The first thing you notice is that a FreeAgent Go Flex Drive icon shows. Install it and restart your computer and it will then detect the harddrive.
Note: It doesn't detect the harddrive but the software first. So, you need to install it and then after reboot, the drive will show up.
There is no pre-installed movies or third party software but the installation software and instructions via PDF.
So, installation was very easy.
III. PERFORMANCE
****BIG NOTE FOR MAC USERS**** - First off, this is important to know. Apple computers as of now (Feb. 2011) are not sold to support USB 3.0 (and Steve Jobs is not going to approve it anytime soon). Others have connected a LaCie USB 3.0 card to a MacPro or a MacBook. But it's important to note that if you have a Mac, especially an iMac or Mac Mini, you're not going to get 3.0 speed. Now if you have a PC and purchase a USB 3.0 card to install in your tower or a USB 3.0 enabled laptop or computer, then you can access the speed of these drives.
With that being said, at this time, there is no way I can test the USB 3.0 functionality of this harddrive. But it's good to know that you can use this drive in the near-future for a computer that does utilize USB 3.0.
OK, as for my tests....I was pretty amazed how quick this drive was. I did four types of tests on this drive using no software for speed tests but my internal feel of working on these files on two of my other big harddrives:
A. ADOBE PRODUCTS: I utilized the drive as a Photoshop scratch drive and also worked on a hi-res, huge image with many layers and it opened up quickly. I used it to open an InDesign book (graphic heavy) that I wrote and it opened up quickly. Also, opened up an Illustrator .eps and it opened up quickly as well. For Adobe Premiere, I encoded a 3-minute video (nothing huge) and performance also was quick as compared to my other drives.
B. FILE TRANSFERS: I then proceeded to transfer huge files from my main drive, another external drive to this GoFlex drive and files were transferring quickly.
C. POSER: I rendered a 3D image and performance was also very good on this drive as compared to my other drives.
D. TIME MACHINE: I also used this as a Time Machine backup on my iMac 1GB hard drive and time of backing up files were fairly quick as well.
IV. SOUND
I know for some users, they love uber-quiet drives. When transferring files or working on the drive, you can hear it, but it's not as loud as my powered drives.
JUDGMENT CALL:
I felt that this drive works great as a back-up drive for small video encoding for YouTube or Facebook (have not tested this on larger video products for encoding), as a scratch drive for high-end graphic design users, 3D renders and Time Machine backups.
I don't know how well the drive would work as a main drive, if your iMac HD or MacBook HD goes kaput but I would imagine that as a backupdrive, it should work fine but I have not tested it as a primary drive for an operating system.
But I will say that anyone looking for a backup drive for files, Time Machine, for graphic design or 3D-Rendering and smaller video rendering capabilities should find this drive to be perfectly suitable for them.
If you do travel a lot and need durability, I would recommend having this small drive in some sort of case but the case is not made of high-impact steel or rubber.
Once again, this drive does have a USB 3.0 and as of now, Apple computers do not come with USB 3.0. But it does work as a USB 2.0 drive connected to your drive or a USB 2.0 adapter. If you have a PC with USB 3.0 or a MacPro using a LaCie USB 3.0 card, then you will be able to tap into the speed of this harddrive and probably see even more fantastic results.
But there is nothing I can find negative about this drive.
Highly recommended!
UPDATE:
May 30, 2011: After constant use, especially as a Time Machine backup and iPad file backup, the GoFlex has died. Four months of life and a harddrive death. I am a big fan of Seagate drives but this is the first drive I have used that is portable.
As I looked online, it appears others who had the drive for a short time also experienced a harddrive death (if you have a receipt, you can easily get yours fixed by warranty) but this is where I need to downgrade my score for this drive. Typically if I have a harddrive failure, I can easily take the drive and put it in a dock or another enclosure to save the data. In this case, there are no screws or openings to show that the drive can be saved.
So, if you have 1TB of data...heck even several gigs of data and you depend on this drive with your life...I wouldn't. I would use this as a temporary backup but I do have to warn people that if the drive is dead, unlike an external drive or a regular HD/dock, there is no way of saving the data.

First Impressions:
Nice packaging. Nice looking device, it's not much bigger than a four port hub. It has both the Cisco and LinkSys logos on the face. Vertical or horizontal mount. The package contained the device, quick setup poster, and a CD.
Installation:
I have an existing server, running Win2K Server, that I store my MP3 collection on. This product works by installing an agent on a PC and then connecting the device over a hard wired LAN or WiFi (802.11b). My setup allows me to use either LAN or WiFi and of course I chose the wired setup for max bandwidth and so I could actually listen to music and use my phone or microwave without dropping packets and thus songs. The agent installation was flawless and the media adapter and my server were talking within a few minutes after cracking up the box. Once the agent is installed on a PC, you really only have one option: Point the agent to your media. So of course I decided to point it to my entire (29 gig) mp3 collection which began in a single MP3 folder. Well, it starts to "Search" and then simply would disappear. No error, no nothing. Ok, maybe my collection was too big, so I start dragging my genre folders which were maybe 1 gig a piece...same thing happend. Ok...so I decide to drag a single album over to the agent and finally it seems to take the 6 songs in the folder and I rush over to my TV to fire up the device...it was able to play three of the songs and then the entire folder disappeared and thus I had no music to pull up anymore. After a few reboots and trying different folders I had similar results. My trade, I'm an IT guy...so there were no 'technical user' issues...I can assure you of that. To this day the device is flakey. It forgets entire folders for no reason at any given time. I've even loaded XP with similar results.
Audio:
The sound is on par with my expectations, though I wish for the price the device would have at least coax digital out. Your stuck with a pair of RCA, which I hooked a pair of Monster cables up to for optimal sound. The unit is equipped with an Intel StrongArm 400 MhZ (The same processor the latest PocketPCs use) and thus is pretty good at decoding and playing the MP3/WMAs.
Display:
The menus are sloppy. There is absolutely no customization on for menus either. There are NO visualizations while songs are playing. You can't see anything important like bit rate or most of an ID3 tag (genre, year, etc.). You are stuck with an unsizable screen that shows you the track name and album name and running time. That's it. Plus they use such a huge display, that a band or song title with a long name (13 chars +) gets lopped off. Sloppy stuff all around on the visuals. Again, I expect more.
Photos:
Photos are displayed well. No real problems here. The device sure could flip through them faster though with this processor. One plus is the ability to play MP3s while viewing photos. However, some lag does occur on larger photos. Whether this is due to bandwidth, processor, or a combination I'll leave up to the "engineers" over at Linksys to figure out and hopefully fix over the next decade or so...
Support:
This is where the stars began to seriously dive. ... I doubt the engineers who designed this paper weight released this as a stable product under their free will. It's a joke.
Conclusion:
... I would recommend looking at the new Gateway DVD/MP3 network device or waiting as this market opens up more. We will all want to stream over DivX movies, MP3s, and every other type of media soon. I'm just going to wait a few years while they refine this technology better.

NETDISK SOLO NewFAST - Enclosure 351UNE Review

The Iocell NetDisk 351UNE is a poor product. The name makes everyone believe this device is a "Network Attached storage" device (commonly called a NAS device). This is NOT a NAS device. This device is a 'NDAS' device.
A NDAS device is a made-up word by Iocell/Ximeta to mean their version of a networked storage device. With the Netdisk 351UNE - Using NDAS- the storage device requires every computer to install the 'Netdisk' install utility.
Once done only ONE computer with THEIR software installed write to the drive. The rest can only READ from the drive. With newer versions of their software multiple people may have permissions (beta version). With the upgraded beta versions of the software- the 'host' computer (first computer to have write access while installed) must ALWAYS-BE-ON for other drives to access the data and write to the drive. The included software that ships with the drive only allows for ONE computer to write and is only compatible with Win98/2000/2003 Server for network access. Vista drivers included are only for e-sata/usb.
The Netdisk 351UNE does not support ftp/bit torrent servers/ ect as there is no IP address assigned to the networked drive ever. There is no configuration web page available and no drive statistics to view. To 'mount' and 'unmount' the drive you click on the drive icon available in the task-bar at all times.
Summary:
Do not buy this expecting a NAS device (A drive enclosure that you could simply turn on and have a drive available on the network to save files to retrieve files). The NetDisk 351UNE is not a NAS device. The NetDisk 351UNE is a network gimmick for a poor-mans networked hard-drive at a comparable price.

After my Linksys WRT54G failed, I was not looking forward to another wireless router installation 'experience'. It took the better part of one day to install the Linksys with the aid of multiple downloaded documents from their web site to finally get the right combination to work. The Linksys was still in warranty when it failed, but no amount of money or service would convince me to continue using this unit. I was tired of having to reconfigure it about once a month when it would just decide to quit working.
So, thanks to high ratings for the Zyxel X-550 router on Amazon.com, I thought I would go this route. I am not a real technical writer so I am not going to get into the comptuer buzz words that the geeks will use (I do not understand what they say anyway). I do not care how it works, as long as it works and is easy to install.
Well, I followed the basic installation instructions and it was working within minutes. I use a Bellsouth provided DSL modem and there was absolutely not one single hang up to get on-line in just a few minutes. Setting up the security encryption was just about as easy.
I have used the Zyxel X-550 for several months now without a hiccup. I have two, and sometimes three, different brands of wireless access points connected most of the time without any problems. I did add a Zyxel directional antenna to one unit which was in a bad location.
The Zyxel X-550 is easy to configure and is now basically one of those items I just ignore and forget about because it just does its job day in and day out and needs no attention.

Brother MFC-5890CN Professional-Series Color Inkjet All-in-One with Networking and Large-Size Printing Review

This is a great printer--I give it 5 stars because it works AS ADVERTISED. This is HIGH PRAISE compared to the 6 other printers I've owned over the last 5 years (1 Brother laser, 1 Samsung, 4 HP's; only the Brother laser is still in use; to be fair, one of the HP inkjets still functions, but I have chosen to stop paying $60 every 4 months for ink). In looking for a replacement color printer, my search criteria were high-capacity ink cartridges, fax capability, ADF (auto document feeder) for scanning, and networkability. (Ideally, installation would be automated and wouldn't load my computer with megabytes of software that I didn't want...sigh). I first looked at the Brother MFC-490CW which, on sale, would have been 60% of the price of the MFC-5890CN. Second, I looked at the HP J6480 AIO. I am at the end of my rope with HP printers (I could write pages on this) but it looked at it for 2 reasons: (1) 2 different sales people at 2 different stores said over and over that the HP had much better image/print quality than the Brothers and (2) it does have a high capacity ink cartridge option (74XL, 75 XL). Then I looked at the MFC-5890CN which I decided to buy. I did consider the Brother MFC-6490CW, but it would have been an extra $50 to $100 dollars and it's HUGE (too big for my work space).
I think the Brother MFC-490CW is an awesome printer. It has good ink capacity (LC61 cartridges) but does not work with the high-capacity cartridges (LC65 series 25% more expensive for double ink) that it's big brothers can use (5890CN and 6490CW). I REALLY WISH that the MFC-5890 I purchased included the 6x4 photo paper bypass tray that the MFC-490CW has (my only disappointment with it! maybe Brother will offer an accessory tray with that feature). It also has built-in wireless networking, which sounded like a big deal but, as I discuss below didn't add anything--I am using the FULL capabilities of the MFC-5890CN wirelessly through my wireless router as I explain below. I decided to go with the MFC-5890CN over the MFC-490CW mainly so that I could use the LC65 high-capacity ink. Printing on 11x17 paper may also be useful to me. (It can NOT scan 11x17 documents as another review said. I guess that person never looked at it in the store as it's obvious that the scanner glass is only 8.5 by 11 and not 11 by17 like the MFC-6490CW.) It also has double the warranty period, 2 years, and double the duty cycle--I hope this means it really will last longer but only time will tell.
I looked at the HP J6480 AIO very carefully. The price was the same as the MFC-5890CN. This was the only similar HP printer that I found that had high-capacity ink. It has built-in wireless networking. It does NOT have a color LCD screen. To test the image quality, I went to the store and made color copies of the same test documents (pictures my children made) with the HP J6480 and the MFC-5890CN, both on highest quality. The Brother MFC-5890CN was very much better than the HP. Do the test yourself--my Staples in town has all the printers plugged in and loaded with paper. The only benefit of the HP J6480 is an automatic two-sided printing feature. However, this isn't too great a feature with inkjet as there is a pause to "let the ink" dry before it flips the page. Again, I tried this at the store--it was really annoying b/c if you only copy 1 side, the printed page pops out, the printer status screen says "Please wait, ink drying" or something like that, a few seconds pass, it sucks the page back in to flip it over, and then you can have your copy. If I want to duplex to save paper, I'll just use my laser.
So I bought the MFC-5890CN. I have had several nice surprises since. First, it prints GREAT! photos using the ink provided. I bought the Brother "innobella" 4x6 glossy photo paper ($5 for 20 sheets), put it in the paper tray, put the memory stick from my camera into the printer card-reader slot, selected the picture I wanted on the LCD, clicked print, and after about a minute, out popped at beautiful borderless 4x6 glossy picture that, to my eye, was about as good as any photo I've seen (from another printer or Walgreens). I was very, very, very happy how easy this worked and how good the picture looked. It worked just as well using "Picture Bridge" which just means you connect the camera straight to the printer with a USB cable. Also, I used the built in red-reduction feature and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked (this was a portrait type picture with one person's face in the picture). I can't vouch for pictures using other photo paper--you see a lot of postings that it's better to match paper and ink. Second, I really like the Paperport software. I can scan directly into PDF and organize my files easily into different folders. Third, the color LCD screen is extremely useful, especially with direct photo printing. After 2 weeks, there are only two negatives--(1) I wish it had a built-in tray for photo paper as this would save time (it's little brother the 490CW and it's big brother the 6490CW both do) and (2) whoever designed the ink placement doesn't have any small children around--my 3-year-old can pull the little door open and it's hard for him to resist trying to pull out the colorful ink cartridges (most of the HP inkjets hide the ink deeper inside the printer).
INSTALLATION TIPS: I have an desktop running XP with Norton security suite; this connects via Ethernet to a Belkin Wireless router. I have a laptop running Vista also with Norton security suite that connects to the Belkin router wirelessly. I connected the Brother MFC-5890CN to the Belkin router with a direct Ethernet connection. I turned off the Norton Firewall and ran the standard Brother installation including Paperport software. (Note that I run the Norton firewall but keep the Windows firewall disabled on both computers.) Everything worked fine including Scan to functions selected from the printer. When I turned the Norton firewall back on, it stopped working. I add the printer "Node Name" to the Norton "Trusted Site list:" and everything now works. (The Node Name is a 12 character alpha-numeric code found on the printer as follow: click Menu button, scroll to "Network" and select, select "Wired LAN", select "TCP/IP", Node Name is at the bottom of the list--leave off "BRN", e.g. my Node Name is 008077D3C1B5--maybe it's the same for everyone--I don't know. I tried using the printer IP address found at the same location but this did not work. To add to Norton "Trusted Sites" do this: open Norton security suite by double-clicking icon in system tray, find "Internet Security and Firewall Options" link and click in the "Settings" section, click, "Trust Control" on left, click "Trust" tab on top, click Add button to add. I think it's all easier to do than it sounds.) It shouldn't be so complicated but it seems like this kind of tweaking is inevitably necessary if you use Norton and Windows and want to network. My laptop was actually easier. I again turned off the firewall while I installed the software (unplug your WAN/cable/DSL line while the firewall is off). Even though the laptop connects to the router wirelessly, when I selected "Wired LAN Connection", it found the MFC-5890CN just fine, loaded the drivers, and everything works fine. This includes walking up to the printer, loading documents in the document scanner, selection Scan To on the printer menu, selecting my laptop from the list, clicking OK, etc. To me, it seems like it works as well as it would if the printer itself had built-in wireless networking. I have not yet tried the Fax to PC function to the wireless laptop.
One other thing, built-in scanning options on the printer include Scan to Email, Image, OCR, File, FTP. These all scan to the Brother "Control Center 3" program; you can change these virtual buttons to scan to Paperport via the XP or Vista control panel (double-click Scanners, select Properties, etc.) This is a bit buggy with Vista but works perfectly on XP.

VIZIO VBR210 Blu-Ray Player with Wireless Internet Application, Black Review

I purchased this Blue-Ray player from Target 2 weeks ago and love it. I read the reviews on the 220 model after my in store purchase and was really concerned at first but have not experienced any of the issues mentioned in those reviews. I am glad though I purchased the Target 2-year $19.99 replacement warranty just in case.
The Blue-Ray player comes with a set of composite cables included in the box which I used while I was waiting for my HDMI cables. The picture even with just composite cables was great. The Vizio 210 has one HDMI port, one composite video/audio port or one component video/audio port (cannot use composite if using component), one digital coaxial, one usb and one ethernet port.
Wireless setup was a snap and I was connected in 30 seconds. The only annoying thing is that the wireless adapter on the back of the Vizio unit has a red light which flashes continuously. No dropped wireless connections like reported with the 220 model. Vizio recommends using their router but this is no doubt a marketing ploy as any wireless router will work.
The upconverting works really well. We got the new Bruce Springsteen dvd/cd set which includes some really old video concert footage. It looked really dark and hard to see on the regular dvd player but looks much, much better on the Blue-Ray player.
Had no issues playing Blue-Ray movies and while it does take about 10-15 seconds to load the Blue-Ray disc I did not find this unexpected as the Blue-Ray disc contains a lot more data than a regular dvd. Also had no issues stopping and restarting a movie as it remembered where I stopped the disc. This was reported as an issue on the 220 model. It also gave the option to continue from the stopping point in the movie or restart from the beginning of the movie which I like.
There is a usb port on the Blue-Ray. It will play video and audio files contained on an inserted usb thumb drive and will also upconvert those videos files. I have not tried hooking up my laptop via usb yet but will provide an update. I use a 16GB usb thumb drive and the Blue-Ray player displays the usb drive folder structures and file names on the tv so it is easy to find stored media.
I have only used Pandora so far and that has worked really well. I will update this review after I have tried Netflix and BD-Live.
The only odd thing I noticed when I tested this player with hdmi, component and composite cables was that when I use component video/audio cables the zoom settings on my tv did not work correctly even though they worked fine with hdmi and composite cable. In all fairness this could be a tv issue and be unrelated to the Vizio.
UPDATE 1/19/11: Netflix works great and streams very quickly. However there have been a few incidents where the VBR210 froze either during streaming or at movie commencement and had to be powered down and restarted. There were also two incidents where there was severe pixelation and both incidents were resolved by powering down the VBR210 and restarting it after a few minutes. Overall in relation to the number of movies streamed these have not been significant issues and were quickly resolved. Still no issues playing either Blu-Ray or regular DVDs. It does appear though that because this unit does not have internal memory that the USB drive is critical for streaming to work properly. I use a 16GB thumb drive which is approximately 50% full. Also my Cisco-Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster has worked flawlessly with this VBR210.

D-Link DAP-1350 Wireless N Pocket Router Review

I've been looking for something like this for a long time, something to carry in my laptop bag when I travel and something to carry in my IT toolkit.
This device has 3 operational modes with different uses. I wouldn't recommend this device unless you need to switch between these modes with the same device, but that feature has good uses.
There is a Client mode. This will allow you to join the device to a wireless network, and bridge it to the ethernet port. This means you can connect a wired device to a wireless network. The downside to this mode is that one must first manually configure an IP address in the subnet of the Dlink default IP (192.168.1.50) so one can get to the configuration, then reset their IP back to dynamic or an IP in the wireless network you're connecting to.
This is useful for when someone moves a wired only computer or printer where there isn't a wire yet, and you need to just get it working for a while until the cabling happens or a more permanant device is ordered. You can also use it to connect your Xbox over at a friend's house. They may have wireless, you may have wired like in my case. Just configure it for their network and plug it into your xbox and bring it over. There's other potential uses for this mode too.There is a Router mode. This will let you share an internet connection on the wired port with wireless devices. This puts them behind a NAT router as well, with all the usual settings. This is the easiest to setup and understand, just like your typical router but missing wired ports. You can get in on the default dlink wireless network, go to the default IP (192.168.1.50) and then change any settings, setup security, setup a static WAN address etc.
This is useful for when you want to share a dsl modem with a group of laptops, or join a laptop to a wired network but have it behind the NAT firewall, isolating it from incoming access from that network. I really won't use this option much, but as an IT guy, it's helpful to have in my laptop bag a spare router that could be setup for wireless clients in a pinch.
There is a Access Point mode. This will let you bridge a wired network into a wireless network. This bypasses any firewall/router and will share the wired network's DHCP and all that. This works out of the box with no configuration, but I'd recommend connecting to the wired port with a static ip to connect to the 192.168.1.50 and changing the name/setting up security. You don't want to have rogue access points allowing people unsecured access to your wired network usually, even temporarily.
This is the most useful mode for me. You can use this at locations that don't have a wireless. Just plug it in, and then you can connect your laptop and roam around without having to cable your laptop in. You can connect multiple devices as well. This is good for taking a hotel with a poor or no wireless connection but a wired one, and still using your iPhone/Android wifi for example. Most of my clients don't use wireless on the corporate lan, so I can use this to jack in and use my tablet without dragging the cord around.It comes with a nice zipper case for cables, AC adapter and the device, though it is slightly larger than it needs to be.
It has a USB cord to power the device off the laptop instead of the AC adapter, but it seems like the range is reduced in this mode.
The range isn't as good as a larger wireless N device with larger antenna (internal or external)
There is no antenna jack for an external antenna.
There is a USB port to share with the Shareport utility or use a 3G modem with it, only in router mode.
Each mode switch has it's own config, passwords, defaults and so on. I suggest using a labelmaker to record the important settings on the device for each switch mode if they are changed.
It supports WPS and has a WPS button even, but I didn't test that since I dislike automagic wizards.The only way I can imagine this being improved is the external antenna jack, a second LAN port for LAN router mode and maybe a battery (ala mifi devices) to run for a few hours without having to find a power cord.

Final verdict on the Trendnet TEW-633GR and its routing problem. (See Final Update below for the end results.)
Summary: When I connect my systems (Red Hat, Windows, Palm OS, OS/2 (Warp/Server)), PS2, etc to the Internet using this router, I'm unable to reach various Internet addresses. Doing a trace route finds the packets go so far and then get "Destination Network Unreachable."
NOTE: This also occurs from the router's administration page's ping page not just from various machines on the network.
The problem does NOT occur under two circumstances.
1) I connect a system directly to my Comcast cable modem.
2) I use my Linksys router (WRT54G or WRT600N).
Hook the Trendnet back up and the problem returns 100% of the time.
After calling Trendnet support, I began to become hopeful in finding a solution. Level one sent me almost immediately to level two, who called me back and worked through various possibilities. Follow-up phone calls from level two, though, required I contact them.
During the last session level two agreed something "interesting" was going on for two reasons.
1) They were unable to ping to these sites from their location using DSL. Their trace routes failed at the same point.
2) They connected into my router and verified mine failed by using the ping feature under Administration.
NOTE: I'm avoiding using the term web site, as I use various Internet protocols into these sites (e.g. sftp, ssh, smtp, dns, imcp, and yes http).
They gave me a choice to send them the unit or send it back to Amazon.com for a refund. I decided this unit is still my first choice as a replacement for the Linksys. Getting a RMA number, I send the unit back. This is where we are today. Trendnet has the unit (USPS tracking) but has yet to contact me.
The TEW-633GR works great otherwise and the gigabit wired interfaces do improve system to system speed for various protocols (e.g. ftp, sftp, large http requests, etc.).
Can I recommend it to you? If the Internet addresses you try to reach doesn't hit this routing issue the answer is yes! But I'm not sure what Internet addresses have problems with this router. You might go a lifetime without hitting this problem or one day you need to connect to your new employer's site and can't. Fortunately, Trendnet does seem interested in solving this issue.
I'll update this review as I get more information. The verdict is still out and hopefully this router will get a five by five rating and be with me for a very long time.
Final update:
According to the router's developers the problem is with the ATHEROS chip set they use.
I'm using Comcast and tried both a RCA and Motorola modem. We also tried DOCSIS 1.1 and 2.0 before I ended up returning the router. Trendnet said they are ** NOT ** going to fix the issue for a couple of reasons.
(1) They don't have cable access at their headquarters. They have T-1 and DSL.
(2) They don't believe cable users are a large percentage of their business.
(3) We agreed not all cable users will see this issue. Yet, those who do will be out of luck, period.
I'm now using a Linksys WRT600N with a Broadband chipset with no routing issues. I returned the Trendnet TEW-633GR to Amazon.com because of this design / software defect (per Trendnet assessment).

I bought this item, because, on the back of the box, it shows the WG602 being used as a bridge to connect to a WGT624 access point. This is extremely misleading, and well, plain wrong, as a couple of other reviewers have pointed out. I was on the phone with extremely unhelpful tech support (that they outsourced to India, I believe), and it took several hours of run-around for the support guy to actually admit that the two products are not compatible (he had to ask someone else). Had he researched this properly in the beginning, hours would have been saved. I was eventually informed (after being told to upgrade firware, change numerous settings, etc.) that the WG602 would only bridge to another WG602. THE BACK OF THE BOX IS WRONG! Don't buy this if you're looking for a bridge that's compatible with any other AP.

I install and configure things like this EVERY day. This one was a bit different. Terribly painful if you followed their setup instructions. I bought the refurbished unit because I am cheap and why pay more for something when you do not have to?
Only missing a star because of the setup.
If you read any reviews about the initial setup then you know that it is a pain to setup with or without the CD. This unit had me restoring my router to default configurations and running up and down the stairs 5 times to my PC (software that came with it did not work with my MAC Laptop until I downloaded it from the Linksys website). I am not sure what Linksys was thinking when they figured this would be "easy". I gave up doing it their way when it said restore the router to factory defaults.
I found better instructions on the internet than from what came on the CD or the Linsys website. Instructions that provided a default IP that you could get to the web GUI with. Worked great.
I am using this to stream from a Wireless N Linksys router and speeds are wonderful with 720P HD streaming (H.264 encoded) to a local media server (set to N ONLY). I have a separate router for non N devices. I have my DVR, TV, PS3, and Slingbox hooked up via a switch to it with no issues after configuring and statically setting the IP address for the unit.
Easy setup tips:
1. Throw away the CD.
2. Set your IP address to 192.168.1.2
3. Plug in directly to your PC.
4. Open up your web browser to http://192.168.1.225
5. login with default password of admin (no username)
6. configure for your wireless network and if necessary re-IP it with a static IP outside the range of the DHCP server so it does not interfere with other devices connected via switch otherwise DHCP with issue a conflicting IP address to your equipment on the other end of it (Software bug IMOP, but it works for remote units when IP is statically set on the bridge).
7. Pop a cold beverage of your choice and enjoy the time you saved not having to run a new cable through the walls.
Maybe they should pay me to advertise and write their manuals.

Toshiba BDX2500 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) Review

I bought this player 2010-07-01 and found two weeks into ownership that it has random issue with not turning on via remote or power button. Its connected via HDMI directly to a Toshiba LED TV. I called Toshiba and they created a ticket for the issue. At first no one admitted there was a problem and later as we tried to diagnose the problem to find the cause they admitted that some but not all units exhibit this problem and it doesn't matter what set they're connected to. They hinted that replacement had corrected 95% of all customer problems for "no power up". Unplugging the unit for 20secs corrects it for a while.
Turning off the CEC HDMI link for TV control to the BD player will help most people. Also leaving my TV in the quick power up mode keeps something alive which allowed the unit to power on 100% of the time when the TV is left in that mode.
Don't get me wrong, Toshiba offered to RMA the unit up front so no complaints there. Also the Service Center connects in the USA!!!! +5 stars for that!

Its a nice unit, remote is easy to use, Net-Flix streams flawlessly through the RG45 cable. Its slow to start a BlueRay disc but I think thats normal. My only complaints are simple; If I push the eject button, do as I say and give me the DISC! Yes, its slow to respond in that way but picture and sound are great. Initially I had audio sync issues as the audio was delayed by surround sound so getting the correct settings in the Audio format output and receiver settings fixed that.
I'm sending it back and we'll see what comes my way in return. A newer model or a replacement of the same model?
**Update 2011-01-19
Since the 1st unit was RMA'd, Toshiba has sent me two more BDX-2500 on their dime shipping expenses covered. The same problem continues on each unit; they fail to turn on after normal daily use and you must unplug the BD player from the outlet to reset it. When it works I like it. When it randomly fails to turn on, it's hateful! Again, great customer service but the product has issues. Toshiba accepted my request to grant a refund for the player so I'm sending the 3rd unit back in exchange for check.
- I've turned to Sony and grabbed a BDP-S570 and I have not had any problems in two weeks of ownership. There were two major trade-offs; Sony lacks options for audio output choices over optical digital. Here Toshiba wins. The Sony is fast to power up and eject the disk, plays Netflix in HD video quality but has a Play Station menu and a bunch video stream options most of the world doesn't need (excessive useless clutter). I'll do a Sony review later. . .

Buffalo Technology AirStation High Power N300 Gigabit Wireless Router & AP WZR-HP-G300NH (Black) Review

Our house is like a wireless black hole. We have tried multiple Wireless G routers and cannot get a strong signal throughout the house. If the router is in the center of the house, we usually get a 11 mbps connection from our Wireless G clients. If we put the router at one end of the house, we do not get a signal at the other corner. We don't live in a huge house by the way. With this router, we get a full strength signal through the house, regardless of whether it is placed in the center or in one corner. I assume it's due to high gain antennas plus the built-in power amplifier. The range of our Wireless-G network has been extended greatly without even having to upgrade our computers to Wireless-N adapters. Most Wireless-N routers transmit in the 100 mW range (e.g. Linksys WRT610N, D-Link DIR-825). This router transmits above 800 mW, close to the legal limit of 1000 mW. You can look up the transmit power of all routers on the FCC web site. Excellent product!
Update on September 1, 2009: Buffalo has confirmed a bug in the router. It sometimes loses the ability to connect to wireless clients. It seems to happen to me once every 1-2 weeks. I have to reboot the router to correct. They assured me that the first firmware update will correct it. The significant speed and range improvement for me makes it worth dealing with this minor issue.

Update on October 29, 2009: Updated firmware (v1.65) is available on the Buffalo Technology website. My router is running it, and so far I have not seen any issues.

I bought the Swann Alpha Digital Wireless SD Recorder (SWA43-D6C12 sold separately)which came with one camera. The unit is a quad that can handle 4 cameras. So I ordered 3 of these extra cameras. I think the color daytime image is pretty good although not HD. What I really liked is that it has audio recording. Audio is pretty good and does what I need it to do. I wanted the microphone for my front door and so I can hear what is going on without going downstairs. These are indoor/outdoor cameras. Just plug into power, install camera with three screws and it automatically detects the DVR, plug into any TV or monitor to view(sold separately). Pretty good quality and A+ for easy to set up.

Product works well. Shipped to me with v1.0 of the software -- had to get v1.1 from the website. Also, it's a little large, so it will block things that are very close (e.g. another USB port on top of or right next to it). Trendnet includes a small (about 2") USB extension cable to resolve the problem, though that's a little awkward. On the other hand, probably all wireless N usb adapters will have the same problem, because of the extra antenna & circuitry. Range and throughput are excellent, and it doesn't keep dropping connection like some adapters do.

FWIW, I've verified that this is compatible with not only Trendnet Wireless N routers, but also Linksys WRT600 and dlink dir-655

2.4GHZ YAG1 ANTENNA 16DBI Review

The first time we put this up, we only got about a 20% improvement in the signal. After moving it around and using the included software with our wireless card, (MSI) we were able to find a perfect location that gave almost 98% signal (up from 50%) and excellent S/n ratio. Move it a few inches one way or the other and it drops by 20%. Move the angle by 5degrees and it drops 20%. So if it's perfectly aligned, you can get a big boost in signal. For us, that means 15' high aimed directly at the repeater antenna (hawkings corner antenna.) This was at a distance of 100' from the repeater and about 150' from the main router (wireless g, not tried it with n yet) thru 2 buildings (main router and repeater in one building (stick built) and this antenna in a metal warehouse.) I want to try to aim it directly at the main router instead of the repeater but there is no way to aim it. It has to be mounted flat against a wall. The only way to aim it would be mounted it on a pole, but it didn't come with pole mounting hardware and that only addresses left/right, not up/down. However, I have an idea for that and will update this review when it's done.
Bandwidth test went from 400-700Kbs to 2-4Mbs. While not very good for a 100Mbs network, considering it's going thru 2 buildings and a repeater, and it was a 5-10 times increase in BW, we are very happy.
(Note: This is an outdoor rated antenna, but so far we are using it indoors going thru the building walls instead of mounting it outside.)

Engenius EAP9550 Wireless N 300Mbps Access Point/Repeater Review

I got this access point because I wanted a more or less permanent, whole house solution for wifi access, with RADIUS authentication for my own devices and an open network for guests.
The Engenius brand is made by Senao which (I believe) makes some equipment for netgear and others.
I like the smoke detector form factor. It installs pretty easily onto the ceiling. The holes are not lined up exactly with a ceiling box which I think it should have been. But no big deal, just use the supplied anchors and screws and attach it to your ceiling. You can turn off the LEDs if they get too annoying. Since they are blue they are bright at night.
The internal antenna performs well for its intended application which is access inside a building. At least in my case the signal did not propagate well outside which necessitates a separate AP for outdoor use. Not a deal breaker by any means. Power over ethernet is a must for this device, and it works well in that regard.
The LAN side is 10/100 which isn't really a big concern but it would have been nice to have gigabit. But it is rare to exceed 100Mbps throughput anyway on 2.4GHz 802.11n.
Lots of features including all of the encryption methods (WPA, WPA2, WEP), RADIUS connectivity, NTP, even a graph which tracks traffic. It has VLAN tagging which works fairly well, and a management VLAN which handles the web interface, ntp and RADIUS traffic. I currently have mine setup with three VLANs connected to a pfsense firewall. One VLAN is bridged to my LAN and associated to my primary SSID which uses WPA2-RADIUS. This authenticates against FreeRADIUS on the pfsense box. The second VLAN is associated to a different SSID, is open and is a separate subnet and firewalled off from my LAN. This is for guests. The third is a management VLAN which handles the web interface, RADIUS traffic, ntp etc and is not associated to any SSID.
Everything works really well. Throughput is excellent on b, g and n.
However, it wasn't always this way. The firmware it shipped with (v1.1.2) had a bug where the unit would not connect to RADIUS at all. v1.1.3 had the same problem. Downgrading to an earlier version (v1.1.0) fixed the RADIUS bug but made the unit so unstable it was unusable. Version 1.2.1 fixed everything and now the unit performs flawlessly. So as soon as you get this unit, UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE! (and use the WIRED connection when doing so otherwise you'll brick your unit).
Another minor quirk is the DST settings. You have to set exact dates for DST. This means that you'll be setting the dates every year, since the dates for DST changes every year. Just leave it at GMT and avoid the hassle. The web interface will also force you to close and reopen your browser and relogin if you time out. If you use tabbed browsing you have to close all your tabs and restart your entire browser. You can also access the web interface from only one IP at a time. I suppose it's a security feature but it gets annoying if you change IPs or are on a laptop and move from wireless to wired (which you might end up doing when configuring this unit.)
Tech support is a hit or miss. I sent an email and it bounced back with an error. Two days later I get a reply from some guy saying he will run some tests and get back to me. No communication from them for weeks and then they release the new firmware, problems fixed. I write them back to tell them that it works, and a new tech support person starts over with me as if the previous conversation never happened. Since it was working now I told them just close the ticket.
Overall this is a nice access point and really nice for a whole house, conference room, hotel/motel or office setting where you want something discreet with a decent set of enterprise features. But as I said there are a few quirks, while not a deal breaker are a bit annoying.

Hewlett Packard 3050A Wireless All-in-One Color Photo Printer Review

I have been a Cannon Inkjet printer user for the last 10 years. For my light duty needs they performed fine until the last two purchases. The last two printers failed a couple of months after the warranty expired. That was the last straw with Cannon.
I have not looked into the line of HP DeskJet printers for more than a decade. I was very pleasantly surprised by the selection and prices. After reading as many reviews from every online source I could fine, it appeared that the recently discontinued HP DeskJet 3050 had good reviews and the new HP DeskJet 3050A model was starting to get good reviews also. After using my new printer for a while, I love it.
I was a little worried about setting up the wireless access part but the process could not have been any easier. In fact, the directions to set everything up was so short and simple, I thought HP forgot to include the full directions. But I followed the steps and Bingo; the printer was online and was working.
The printer has a small footprint, is quiet and it prints fast and with very good quality. The scanner works well but is a little slow scanning at higher DPI.
I do have one instillation note I wish to pass on...

My system is a HP notebook, Windows 7 64-bit, AMD processor, ATI discreet graphics, 4 GB RAM and it is wirelessly connected to my DSL modem. Even though the printer will start to work after you follow the steps to set it up, I had to restart my notebook after all of the drivers and software was installed to get full functionality. The restart step was not covered in the directions and not suggested during the installation of the software. However, since completing the installation, the printer has always connected to the network and has never dropped the connection.

First off, I am a loyal Amazon customer for years with little or no return or complaint history. On this item ( Verizon Wireless Samsung Network Extender SCS-26UC4) Amazon should be embarrased. How dare you sell something as new that has been refurbished, re-packed and was sitting in someone elses living room just a short time ago. As instructed I called Verizon to activate this unit. As soon as I gave them the MAC address needed they told me this was sold form Amazon, It was owned by someone previously and I would not be able to get some of the features of the unit because it was registered to another Verizon customers account. On top of that, the MAC numbers on the box were incorrect. This came up after 2 hours of trouble shooting with a very good Verizon Tec. In other words, not only is this unit used, it was repacked (very well at that) in a box with a serial (MAC number) that rendered it useless. Please don't offer me a refund. I am not returning the unit as I need it and the basic functions it has helps my situation. What you and your third party vendor have done here is near criminal. Verizon is very aware of this situation as they told me they are getting dozens of phone calls about this same issue. What's next? Will the laundry basket I ordered today have someone elses dirty cloths odor? Will the $2,000.00 Canon camera I'm about to order have pictures of somebody elses kids? Shame on you and shame on the vendor who is running this scam. My intention is to report these horrible business practices to any and all agencies that will listen. Granted the unit was half the price of what Verizon sells it for. Granted let the buyer beware. But it is the responsibility of Amazon and their vendors to properly describe the unit so the "BUYER CAN BE AWARE"

Netgear 10/100 Mbps Firewall Network Router Review

I use these firewall routers exclusively for small business. I've heard others complain about the VPN capability, but I've never had a problem.
I have them setup on small "mom & pop" shops. They are stable, durable, easily configured, have OK security features and allow VPN remote access.
I've been using the FVS318's since thier introduction, the first ones I installed several years ago - still work great. No unusual packet loss after several years. All ports still work, security, VPN all still working great. Needless to say, when a new customer needed a deployment - I went to Netgear. Netgear has earned my respect. Any savvy tech can configure these in minutes. For the complicated larger customers - I go Cisco. For smaller needs this is a great unit.
P.S. These are also terrific if you want to segment another IP for a small individual network like a surveillance system.

Cisco-Linksys WRT120N Wireless-N Home Router Review

I hardly ever write reviews (like someone else said) but wow, what a piece of crap this is! DO NOT BUY THIS! The setup is easy but this router is junk. It will just stop working for no reason. I don't know if it is overheating or what. I have even tried flipping it over so the vents are facing up. It will just stop working once is a while. By once is a while I mean around 1-3 times a day. Sometimes I have to manually reset(unplug - the reset button doesn't always do it.). Other times it takes a few minutes to start working again. I had a $30 Belkin before and it lasted 2 years with no problems until the end. Once I find a good replacement I'm going to pull an Office Space on this thing.

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Review

I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down. Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.
This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*. It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.
... EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.
I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).
Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now. It functions just as a switch should: without a thought. It just works.

Tenda W311R+ 150Mbps Wireless Lite-N Broadband Router Review

If you have this router, it was either b/c it was free with some kind of promotion or it was on sale real cheap on your local store. This is a just a real quick rundown of pros and cons.
Pros
- Good Connectivity b/c of the external antenna, my upstairs computer gets 150 mbps Wireless N most of the time, with the router set up downstairs
- Really easy to set up with the CD, experts will able to breeze through the intuitive Router Homepage to set customized settings
- Easy to forward ports
- Small dimensions
Cons
- It feels real cheap, almost like a throw away plastic toy
- Firewall closes vulnerable ports, but it does not/you cannot stealth them which is an absolutely bizarre design decision
- It may be underpowered CPU/Ram wise for Wireless N in you compare it to the typical specs for Wireless N for big brands like Cisco, Trenda, Netgear etc etc
Been using it for a day and it has been stable. So far it is doing everything I am telling it to do including torrenting Pioneer One, online gaming, and general internet use without any stability problems. If the router starts to become unstable I will update this review.

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem Review

When evaluating this type of equipment, one must differentiate between the device itself and other factors that can impact its performance. Blaming the manufacturer for issues likely caused by one's ISP is akin to saying, "I can't get past third gear because of all this construction on the highway... I'll never buy a Jaguar again!"
That said, the SBG6580 is a solid piece of kit.
This latest addition to the SURFboard line combines a DOCSIS 3 cable modem with a gigabit switch and a dual-antenna 802.11n wireless access point, providing all the networking equipment a home office needs in a single compact package... this amounts to a single point of failure, but that's par for the residential course. It can deliver 42 mbps downstream on a single channel (which my provider brands "Lightning") with support for eight bonded channels... meaning that when the day comes that ISPs start selling triple-digit speeds, this gateway won't need to be replaced.
Wi-Fi performance has been comparable to my old draft n router with similar range and throughput in a mixed mode environment. What sets the SBG6580 apart are its better indicator lights and superior configuration utility which offers some settings normally found only on enterprise-grade equipment. Those less inclined to tinker should know that push-button support is provided; once the cable guy finished with the wall outlet, setup took less than five minutes.
Finally, one word of caution: the SBG6580 needs airflow. I originally placed it flush against a similarly-sized backup hard drive on my desk and found the unit hot to the touch after a few hours. To avoid problems, do not block the vents.

Brother Printer HL2270DW Wireless Monochrome Printer Review

The Brother HL-2270DW is the follow-up to the immensely popular HL-2170W. The 2170W was popular for it's amazing value and print quality. It was also wildly popular because of a neat toner trick to get it to print more pages out of the toner, even when the printer claimed the toner needed replacing. The one big knock of the 2170W was the difficult wireless setup and for being only able to use one network connection at a time-- either Ethernet or WiFi. The 2270DW adds an automatic duplexer and also improves performance.
PROS:
- Fast, fast, fast
- Great print quality
- 3 connectivity options including WiFi
- Automatic duplexer
- Supports Windows XP/2000/Vista/7, Mac OS X, and various Linux distros
- Good looking
- Great value
CONS:
- Starter toner rated at only 700 pages
- Slight curl for duplex printouts
- Uses different and more expensive toner than 2170W
- WiFi limited to 802.11b/g
Once upon a time, I used to have an NEC laser printer, a generic scanner, and an Epson photo printer all on my desk. Well that got old and I consolidated to a multifunction printer and the last 3 printers I owned have all been color inkjet MFP's. The advantages were many but the one drawback was major. The cost per page for inkjet prints became huge, even when printing in black & white. Many color inkjet printers still use color inks when printing in black & white, thus requiring you to replace not only the black ink cartridges, but some of the color ones as well. For me, magenta and yellow frequently ran out, even though we ONLY ever printed in black & white. I'd finally had enough and sought out a solution. As recently as 3 weeks ago, I was able to purchase the 2170W for my parents for a great price and was going to get one myself but they all went out of stock or had gone up in price. Then I found out that they were being discontinued and the 2270DW was the newer model. I pulled the trigger and have not looked back.
2270DW vs. 2170W
The difference between the older 2170W and the newer 2270DW isn't limited to just the change in exterior color. Considering that the base MSRP remains the same, the 2270DW is an outstanding bargain. The 2270DW is slightly faster at 27ppm vs. 22ppm for the 2170W. The 2270DW also uses a 200MHz processor vs. the old 181MHz CPU. The dimensions are identical except that the 2270DW is half an inch taller and happens to weigh almost a half a pound more. I'm guessing the automatic duplexer is responsible for the slightly larger size. Brother also decided to get cheap and included a starter toner rated for only 700 pages, whereas the 2170W was 1000 pages or 2 full reams of paper. The 2270DW also adds GDI printing
INSTALL
The toner and drum are pre-installed but you have to remove it and prep (shake) it before use. I found the Quick Start Guide to be pretty clear and useful for all three connection methods. WiFi configuration is still a bit hokey, but it was easy enough in my opinion.
(USB)
The USB install was a cinch. Install the drivers off of the disc or download them from Brother's website, then plug the USB cable (not included) into your computer and you're good to go.
(Ethernet)
Though the printer's wireless abilities are nice to have, I prefer to use the Ethernet connection to plug the printer directly into my wireless router. This still allows me to print wirelessly from my laptop and via a hardware switch from my desktop. I also don't have to fiddle with the wireless settings and have a stronger, more reliable connection through my router. Using the install wizard, I selected Peer-to-Peer Network Printer as my preferred network print type and was off and running. I performed the same setup on my laptop over WiFi and installed perfectly. One note, I could not quickly find the MAC address to the Ethernet port so I disabled MAC filtering on my router temporarily. If you don't use MAC filtering, then you have nothing to worry about. Afterwards, I found out that you can print the settings from within the Brother print driver and find the MAC address.
(WiFi)
I think a lot of people think they need a WiFi printer to print wireless but most people have wireless routers already that they can just connect the printer to with an Ethernet cable. A printer with WiFi is really only useful if it won't be attached to your router and want it completely independent. As with the 2170W, the 2270DW requires it to be temporarily connected by USB cable or Ethernet to configure the wireless settings, unless, your wireless router supports WiFi Protected Setup or AOSS. The installation wizard on the CD-ROM is pretty straight-forward and I found the install to be painless. Although, if you are using MAC filtering and not broadcasting your SSID, you'll probably want to reverse those temporarily to configure it then switch it back. This is especially true if you are trying to configure the WiFi AFTER you've already set it up by Ethernet and using BRAdmin to do it. To find the internal wireless card's MAC address, hold down the Go button for 10 seconds until it prints a network config page that will enable/disable WiFi and also show you the MAC address. I don't really need WiFi so I only performed the install for the sake of reviewing the procedure.
PERFORMANCE
Time to print has been improved on the 2270DW by nearly 2 seconds, so less time warming up from sleep or off. The actual print speed improvement is less noticeable but 27ppm is insanely fast. I thought my Consumer Reports #1 rated, HP All-in-One Printer was pretty fast, but the 2270DW is at least twice as fast. Text output, even really tiny fonts, looked great. Graphics were also very good. The 2270DW still supports the most current PCL printer language, developed by HP. Oddly though, Brother decided to add GDI capabilities, which is also known as host-based printing and is typically used on low-end printers that put all the printer processing burden on the PC, rather than on the printer's hardware. For example, Brother's bare-bones, cheap 2140 laser printer is GDI only. The 2270DW already has PCL 6 support so I don't see any benefit to having GDI. Even if using a high-end PC might possibly achieve faster to-print speeds, I would think the extra load put on the PC would be a hindrance over just letting the printer's hardware take care of it. I would personally never buy a GDI-only printer. Lastly, given how recently this printer was released, I'm disappointed they didn't include the better 802.11n Wifi support.
NOISE
The 2270DW is noisier than the 2170W, so if you didn't like the 2170W for it's noise, then you definitely won't like the noise from the 2270DW. The fan does stay on for several minutes after it prints but shuts off eventually and then becomes totally silent. The sounds of a laser printer are a welcome change from the wonky noises that my inkjet printers made.
DUPLEXER
If you decide to use the automatic duplexer, it will add more time to your printouts, but what a convenience to not have to manually flip over sheets of paper. Brother rates the duplexer speed to 10 sides per minute. I've always liked the idea of using both sides of a sheet of paper. Save them trees! The duplexer on the 2270DW works well and I have not had any jams, knock on the wood of one of those trees I just saved. Aside from having network printing, the duplexer is my favorite feature of the 2270DW. The only downside to using the duplexer is that it has a noticeable curl. A commenter suggested that heavier paper (24 lb) as opposed to the more commonly used 20 lb paper might help reduce the curl and paper jams.
SOFTWARE
The drivers for the 2270DW include a lot of customization options for your printer, including using the Toner Saver Mode, which is similar to Draft Mode in inkjet printers. Unless you are printing a resume, the Toner Saver Mode is more than good enough for daily print jobs. Additionally, Brother laser printers have the ability to upgrade firmware. Given that the 2270DW is brand new, this is an important ability to note because bug fixes and performance improvements are sure to become available down the road. The most current version of the firmware as of this writing is v1.02. You can also install various administrator utilities for configuration and monitoring (BRAdmin). I used BRAdmin to change the Sleep time from 3 minutes to 2. Another neat feature is that you can use web based management by putting the IP address of your printer into a web browser. This is a great way to review settings and other useful information like how many pages you've printed, remaining drum life, serial number, and firmware version.
COST PER PAGE
The high-yield (2600 pages) genuine Brother toner (TN450) from Amazon is currently $46, which equates to about 1.8 cents per page. That is ridiculous! It is so much cheaper than most inkjets, which can cost between 4 cents and 8 cents per page of text. The only bummer is that the Brother drum unit (DR420) currently costs $84. At that price, if my 2270DW's drum needed replacing, I would probably just end up buying a new printer. The drum is rated at 12,000 pages, which is 24 reams of paper. Hawking Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-300N Dual Radio Smart Repeater Review

Like others the setup which seemed easy at first really turned out not to be. I suspect that many of the negative reviews are due to complexity issues vs true lemons.
In short this is a good affordable (near industrial) solution, especially considering it is really a full featured router, with 2 High Gain Antennas, Outdoor Enclosure, Mounting Bracket and an included PoE Injector. You get a lot of bang for your $250. I will probably buy a few more for work. (This was for home use)

My Setup Problems, In case you can learn something from my mistakes.
I followed the Quick Start (not the CD), found and connected to the router and walked through the set up. There is a vague warning that says if you set this up in bridge mode you might not be able to access setup again, but that you can hold reset for 10 seconds. Since bridge mode was what I wanted, I figured what the heck I can always hit reset if I get into trouble.

I was just playing with the device testing it with one of my home routers, then I was going to make my real production changes later.
WARNING - THERE IS NO RESET BUTTON.
I later decided that Bridge Mode was not meeting my needs. So I wanted to change the SSID and put the HOW2R back into AP mode. But I could not "speak" to the HOW2R. I did not know its IP address and since it was in Bridge Mode, I could not interact with it directly. After hours of looking for a reset switch, taking it apart, pulling off cables trying to reset it, I gave up and called Tech Support (India) Sunday Night. My support person had great English speaking and comprehension skills. What I had to do was to use the installation CD to "Find" the device via wireless and then learn its IP address. Then, in order to "talk" to the device (my idea) I had to manually change my IP address on my Laptop to be on the same subnet (198.162.5.220) and connect to it again with a physical Ethernet cable. Then I was able to "talk" to the device and change all the settings.
With the Device sitting a few feet from my CiscoE2000 I had comparable signal strength out to about 100ft, but then the HOW2R kept going and going out to about 300ft+. In my final setup with the CiscoE2000 inside a sealed metal data cabinet inside a wood shed, and the HOW2R about 10 feet away on an outside wall, I was able to get close to 100% signal from the HOW2R at a distance of 250ft (as far as I needed to go).
Like others have said, bring an expert if you don't know what you are doing. While this is plug and play, by answering a simple question wrong it will kill your day. For those looking to see only a single SSID I did the following. I disabled SSID broadcast on my CiscoE2000 and used the HOW2R for broadcasting its own SSID.

I would probably buy a few more of these.
By the way, all my testing was with wireless-n. Your mileage may vary.

Netgear Universal Dual Band Wireless Internet Adapter for TV & Blu-Ray (WNCE3001) Review

I received a beta version of this for free and still use it to this day. It was incredibly easy to setup and use. Speeds were good on my n900 router. The ability to power it over USB is very nice and it connects via Ethernet. Price seems a little high but its not really too bad. I use this on my TiVo. I do this because its dual-band and is cheaper than the TiVo N adapter.

We were looking to get a cable modem at a great price. We found it in this modem. It gives us exactly the same features as what we were leasing from comcast. It works great and we did a search at 31 dollars great buy. We just needed to switch it with the one from comcast. I looked up the serial and product number. Amazon gave us a few choices. The seller shipped it fast. We are satisfied.

D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch Review

My model is the DGS-2205 with the 5V power adapter. Like a previous reviewer, I noticed that I wasn't getting anywhere near gigabit speeds to my LaCie Ethernet Raid device. Well, that's because the LaCie Ethernet Raid Device is a slow pig.
After connecting my Mac Book Pro and my Mac Pro to the switch, I started offloading data to the Mac Pro.
Sustained throughput was 320 megabits per second with long bursts up to 720 megabits per second. At this point, the hard drive on the Macbook Pro was the bottleneck. Normally, I don't care for D-link products, but this little switch is quite the gem.
I've also noticed no noise from the unit, even when transferring large amounts of data at near wire speed.

Option ICON 322 Unlocked Wireless 3G Internet Card Review

Item is titled as an unloced wireless 3G internet card. However, when installation was attempted it promptly lets you know that it is locked to ATT. This is useless for an overseas carrier. Unfortunately, I found this out while travelling and was not able to return it when I returned due to the short return policy. In addition, item came packed loose in an ATT box. It seemed as if it was a refurbished item due to its lack of packaging and information. I know that this is not technically a review, because I haven't actually been able to use the item. I was hoping this would work for my needs. Maybe I'll sell it in the marketplace so that someone else can give it a try.

TRENDnet Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-644UB Review

I'm glad to provide a first review for this item. About one year ago, I bought a TrendNet Wireless G PCI adapter for a desktop computer. It was my first experience with the brand and I was very pleased with the quality, compatibility, and ease of set-up.
I again decided to try another TrendNet product after a successful first experience and am very satisfied with this Wireless N USB Adapter. It was set-up in about 5 minutes, probably less. Using Windows Vista, I installed the software from the CD (as stated in the quick-set-up directions). After the installation, I plugged in the Wireless N USB Adapter, it took about one minute to setup the security on the network, identify, and connect.
This was all done on a desktop computer. It works great and there is a noticeable difference over the Wireless G. The quality and reliability of their products are outstanding. I was also fortunate to purchase it for about $23 through Amazon.com. I see the price has gone up at least $10 or so, but it's still a great deal.

Archerfish Quattro 4-Channel H.264 Intelligent Video Surveillance System with Weatherproof Mini Cameras (Ivory) Review

I spent the better part of a day installing, setting up, and experimenting with the Archerfish Quattro Interactive Video Monitoring system. My conclusion is that the hardware seems to be solid and reliable but that without a service subscription of $8/mo the product has limited use and appeal. The only features available without a service subscription are viewing recorded video (DVR) and live video. The event detection features that make the Archerfish different are not available. The box itself is pretty locked down and is not accessible in ANY WAY AT ALL from your local lan.
Combined with an extremely high up-front cost (approx $1,000 - $1,200) it's difficult to recommend it. What follow are some of my more detailed notes:
Packaging Contents
*Everything needed is included in the box: AC Adapters, cables, ethernet cable
*No printed instructions in the box but everything is easily available on linePhysical Setup
*Easy to setup/connect cables
*Camera mount needs wrench since they can't be threaded by hand
*Cameras have big bulky heavy adapters instead of lighter ones.
*No easy way to mount cameras level. No visual indicators on camera and video delays makes it tougher
*5 separate AC adaptors! Instead of powering cameras from receiver they need to be powered individually with their own AC AdapterRegistration
*Must provide credit card even for the basic subscription or the free 3 month subscriptionSoftware Setup
*Can't setup a static ip for the device.
*It does not seem to be possible to access the device directly via your local LAN.
*All access must be through the Archerfish website
*Even with UPNP turned off it's very easy to configure your firewall and only one NAT rule is needed to be able to what video remotelyUse
*Only one camera available for live video at a time. It really would have been nice to see all cameras at once.
*There are long delays for live video 5-6 sec from local 8+ seconds from internet
*No way to just use this on local network to view the cameras. Everything needs to be done from the Archerfish website.
*Only records to external USB. No hard drive. limited online storage
*The external USB device is formatted with an ext3 file system. It's a pain for windows users because they can't read this format by default.Event Configuration
*Up to 3 zones per camera can be established.
*Events are only on a per day range (intra is possible) and cannot overlap. You need to add multiple zones for the same range.
*No notifications or search or motion etc. w/o premium subscriptionPricing
*Amazon $1200
*If purchased independently from Amazon the four cameras would cost $260 - $330 (including all accessories)
*$870 ($1200 - $330) is a lot to pay for a device that has no hard drive, cannot be accessed from your network, and requires a paid subscription to make use of all of its
features and reliance on a the vendor to use at all. Imagine buying a computer and only being able to use it as long as the company was in business and offered a service.Quality
*Video quality is Ok. Nothing great. Some of the other cameras I have used from Axis offer much, much better video quality
*No audio. This might be fine for surveillance but home users may be interested in Audio since this can be useful as a baby monitor or a monitor inside the home.Security and Privacy
*All of the video that is recorded by the Quattro (except for the DVR function where it just records all the cams all the time) is stored on the Archerfish website.
*Archerfish does not provide any information about how they safeguard the data. All they say is that their portal is secure and their servers are hosted.
*There is no mention of encryption
