BELKIN F5D7050 Wireless 802.11g USB Network Adapter Review

I have an older iBook that requires an original Apple Airport card. Unfortunately these are no longer in production. They can still be purchased new online for $150-180 if you look for them, or you can get a used one from eBay for $100-150 or so. Couldn't see going those routes so I picked up one of these babies and it works flawlessly with OS 10.4. Belkin doesn't make drivers for it but you can get the driver at the Ralink Technology site (http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm). The Belkin adapter that I received from Amazon is version 3000, and it uses the RT71W driver. It's the one listed at the very bottom of the list of Macintosh drivers, dated 2006/01/25. When you open the box for this adapter, take the Install CD and the Quickstart Guide and all that other Windows-related stuff and throw them straight in the trash. Download and install the driver mentioned above and it'll prompt you to restart afterwards. Then go to your Network System Preferences pane and select Ethernet Adapter(en1) as your connection method. Plug the adapter into an available USB port (1.1 or 2.0, either one will work), then launch the Ralink Wireless Utility that you'll find in your Applications folder. And suddenly - hey yer smokin'! Been connected by cable for over three days now via a wireless Linksys router without a single disconnect. You can do it, too...

BELKIN F5D7050 Wireless 802.11g USB Network Adapter Overview

The Wireless G USB Network Adapter easily connects your USB-equipped desktop or notebook computer to your wireless network for Internet and file sharing. Desktop users can now join the network with the ease of a USB plug-in, without opening their PC cases; laptop users can enjoy the benefits of staying mobile-while connected to the Internet.

Cisco-Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster Review

The reality of WiFi is that just about everyone I know is not getting as solid a signal as they'd like. I've been frustrated by dead spots in the house, and I'm sure we've all done strange "rain dances" with our notebooks, cables, antennas, etc. to try to improve the signal.
However, my WiFi network did not seem as zippy as my Ethernet when using our cable modem, even though the bandwidth of both networks dwarfs the cable modem. Well, instantly after installing the booster, I got noticeably better response in a room where the signal used to be so weak that Linksys' own utility would show no signal strength (even though I could surf from there).
The WSB24 is trivial to install (180 seconds and that was because I didn't know you had to push the cable onto the connector pretty firmly). If you were a LinkSys pioneer and bought the early access points, you owe it to yourself to upgrade with this booster.

Cisco-Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster Overview

The Linksys wireless signal booster piggybacks onto your Linksys wireless access point (or wireless access point router) to increase the effective range and coverage area of your 802.11b network. The added signal strength also helps speed up your close-range communications, because every packet comes through "loud and clear," reducing retransmissions that are due to reception errors.
To install, just stack the Linksys wireless signal booster on your access point, move the antennas to the booster, and attach the booster's twin cables to the access point--no drivers or modifications to your setup are necessary.
The Linksys wireless signal booster saves wiring costs and helps build corporate wireless infrastructure by driving signals even into those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas. And it's perfect for covering large areas in warehouse environments, public spaces, wireless hot spots, and outdoor venues--anywhere you need extra coverage for your wireless LAN. NOTE: The wireless signal booster is certified by the FCC for use only with the Linksys wireless access point, model number WAP11 and the Linksys wireless access point router, model number BEFW11S4.

ADSL2+/R Cpe Bridge/router with usb& Enet Prt 110V Na Plug Review

This DSL Modem by Paradyne is a reliable trouble free unit provided by many ISPs under a rental contract.
It ships in a bridge configuration by default which is what my ISP requires, so my installation was totally plug and play.
Some ISPs such as AT&T,use a router configuration requiring the modem to be reconfigured.
There are instructions online for doing this but you need to know the parameters that your ISP requires. This would require only moderate technical knowledge.
The Modem itself is solid.

Durable Molded Hard Shell Carrying Case for Novatel / Verizon / Sprint and Other Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspots *Includes Mouse Pad* Review

Great - product was even better than expected - actually a CaseLogic case! The case I received is approx. 5in x 4in x 1.25in - a bit larger than the MiFi but a reasonable size overall. I would judge both the top and bottom to be hard shell, with the sides padded but less rigid. Provides excellent protection -- I think the previous reviewer was nit-picking. Short of running over it with a car, I find it hard to imagine the MiFi sustaining any damage while in this case. Would definitely buy again.

Linksys Wireless-G Router for ATT&T/Cingular 3G/UMTS Broadband WRT54G3G - Wireless router + 4-port switch - EN, Fast EN, 802.11b, 802.11g Review

This router will work with the Sierra AirCard 875 on the AT&T network.
It has a problem delivering full 3G speed however. I cannot get over
900Kb/sec even when parked 400 ft. from the tower. Plugged into the computer, I get 2.8Mb/sec speed, same location.
The problems people are having getting this router to work on an AirCard 875 is that they must set the router up *before* inserting the aircard.
The "APN" entries must be entered correctly for proper operation. Choose "Custom" for your entries. There are two entries that must be made correctly, one is "ISP.CINGULAR" if you were a Cingular customer, and the other is the logon username; "WEP@CINGULAR.COM." If these two settings are correct, save settings, unplug router, inset AirCard, re-power router and all will work correctly. The firmware revision number of the AirCard is of no consequence as I updated my firmware to the Australian 7.2Mb/sec version with no change in performance or connectivity problems. The 4 port switch section performs at 100Mb/sec just as advertised. This router can be configured as an internet backup. A person with DSL or cable can connect that signal to the "internet" port in back of the router and it will route that source. If the DSL or cable fails, it will automatically switch to the AirCard. This router auto-disconnects the AirCard in a 'non-use' time you select, and will auto-connect on demand. This takes care of AT&T's rule against maintaining an "always on" connection (forbidden).
"IMPORTANT" If you were using your AirCard 875 in a notebook/laptop computer... The last speed/network setting you used will remain in the AirCard! If you were using the "Edge" network and then plug AirCard into the router, it will only connect to the Edge network! Select 3G in your laptop before removing the card for use in the router! (if you have 3G available, otherwise , leave set to what works in your area).
I know I went on a bit here, but someone with an AirCard 875 may question purchasing this router if they don't know first that it WILL work, and how to make it work because right out of the box, it won't work. You must enter your provider particulars first!

Linksys has a good reputation for making quality products and this is no exception. I would buy it again.

D-Link DGS-1005G 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch Review

I was looking for a small, low-power, reliable little 8-port gigabit enabled switch with auto mdi/mdix.. and I found it. The unit runs very cool, is completely silent, and sits eloquently in the background. Before I purchased this, I reviewed Linksys (aka Cisco), Trendnet, HP, and a few others options for aggregate throughput, buffer RAM, power usage, etc.
The Dlink DGS-1008G is right at the top of the pack with 16Gbps backplane and 11.9 million packets per second, which roughly translates to .703 Gigabits of sustained throughput, which should be around 87.875MBps (MegaBytes, not bits). Keep in mind that 1Gbps = 125MB of throughput. Not any consumer switches I have found out there that can sustain this data rate. This is one of the highest throughput switches available in 8-port consumer, with HP and Trendnet second and third (in that order).
Worked perfect out of the box. I made up a few more Cat5e cables and away I went. Now if Dlink would only combine this switch with a wireless router and a WAN port!!! THAT would be awesome.
Update 06-26-11: Now that I have had time to test this out, I can get about 84-85 Megabytes per second of throughput, close to the numbers i mentioned above. Tested using iperf/jperf with TCP/UDP. Make sure to set all devices to jumbo frames to get this throughput. I went into network adapter settings and changed the default packet size to 9K MTU. Changed my Synology NAS for 9K also.

D-Link DGS-1005G 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch Overview

Part of a new series of Green devices using D-Link Green technology, the D-Link 5-port Gigabit Switch (DGS-1005G) is ideal for extended networking in small or home offices. In addition to fast Gigabit networking speeds, the DGS-1005G saves energy while reducing heat output, providing you a longer product life without sacrificing operational performance or functionality.
